goofy problem!?

ok so, getting on the highway today.. i romped on it shifted into 2nd.. and immediately lose power.. still running, but something was messed up.
also.... my tach went to zero and stayed there...?

so i revved a little and from what i could tell was running on 3 cyl's. decided to limp it home since i was on the highway. (3 mile drive)

it was popping and carrying on the whole time.. so i assumed it was sending fuel and not sparking..

so when i got home.. pulled cyl 4 spark plug wire and no change... also held it up to a bolt while running and had nothing.

i havent tried swapping coil packs out yet... but even if it was a coil pack why would my tach mysteriously die at the same time??

any thoughts or input?

you need to check the ohms on your coil and go from there

Don't forgot the power transistor, it sends the signal for the tach and also controls spark among the cylinders. Although since each coil pack is responsible for 2 cylinders you should actually have 2 cylinders out or a wire shorting to ground after one cylinder sparks

How to test the power transistors

Probably easier to swap with a known good IPT instead of testing though

Yes, it actually came unplugged. like you or someone on here said... cyl 1 was also out. soo i then looked to the power transistor and sure enough my hard shift was enough to make the engine rock car enough that it pulled the plug right off the transistor.

so im going to put a zip tie around the whole thing to hold the plug onto the power transistor to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.

thanks alot for the help!!

Aw, I was going to suggest that! Too late eh?

Same thing happens to me since my plug is broken for it.

Once in a good while it'll come a little unplugged, and have nearly no power along with the tach reading dropping significantly.

Good call on that!

I'm actually working on the car right now so I'll make sure mine is secure then. Actually just checked and mine still has a clip on it so nevermind. If your clip is broken you might be able to get a new pigtail from the classifieds

Anyway good luck!
