Question

What exhaust to buy?

Just looking to upgrade the exhaust on my 91 gsx. Looking to upgrade to about a 3 inch. What is a good muffler or entire system? I want better flow, than stock. Trying to not break the bank.

There are plenty of Vendor Reviews that should narrow your search down. On a personal note, Some guys would not recommend ebay, but I do not really see a bad thing going for a Muffler or Tip. Again, It is up to personal preference! and funds. The only thing, I would consider a very good manifold more than anything, which what I mean is by after that ...it's

The Apexi is nice. I have it. No complaints.

The Thermal exhausts sound good. Its all up to personal preference and funds, like said above..

Look at some youtube videos and decide which one(in your price range) you think sounds best.

I personally like a custom 3" straight exhaust to a Magnaflow race muffler. Sounds sick.

I second that, by far the nicest sounding exhaust on a dsm in my opinion. Even sounded great on my rs! these are a couple others to look at : Hks hi power, Greddy evo, greddy ti-c, apexi N1 (my fave), apexi dunk, SRS exhaust, Megan racing.
I would look on craigslist a used exhaust is ok, just make sure its not rusted.

I cant imagine how much better a name brand 3" sounds vs an ebay 3". My car with 272s 3" turbo back sounds fn DEEP. I got it for less than 250$ shipped. I know it may rust faster but is it worth 600+ for the EXACT same thing?

2GAWD4U2NV, your exhaust sounds amazing! Im assuming your just running a test pipe?

To the OP, I've got a thermal r&d waiting to go on my 1G Talon but I still have to get the rest of my set up. I decided to go with a punishment racing recirculated o2 housing, and downpipe. EBay stuff works just fine, and you will save quite a bit of money but for me I just like knowing my money is going to companies that support the DSM community. Just my .02¢

I believe that simple and efficient is better, find someone that can bend pipe for you punch out a muffler and weld in a 3 inch pipe so it still looks stock/legal which = out to good sound good flow and inexpensive

I love the way thermal r & d sounds (deepest tone I have heard yet), I had a HKS hi power on my last car which sounded pretty nice, Buschur is always a great product and sounds nice ( very pricey, but you get what you pay for), I currently have a punishment racing 3" dp to a test pipe and 3" mandrel bent pipping to a magna flow which sound pretty nice with my hks 272 cams but a little to loud for my liking. I prersonaly think apexi and megan racing mufflers are way to loud. And again just an opinion but I would stay away from most ebay products, even though other members seem to have had some success with it.

Personal preference of sound and how much your looking to spend really comes in to play. Like what the others said check youtube for exhaust sounds and see which you like best.

Hope this helps.

I just got back into the DSM game, it's been about 8 years. Does Buschur still make exhaust systems for these cars? I thought they were one of the better sounding systems for the DSMs

On all cars I've owned and modded i go to a custom exhaust shop jus for my preference on running a straight pipe setup, for my 1g I was running a 2.5 inch straight pipe all the way..good sound all around but since I've decided to build my 1g to a track car I'm going to upgrade it to a Megan racing 3" downpipe and run it straight 3".. From sum of the custom exhaust shops I got estimates from I'm looking at 500-600 after the downpipe purchase..most custom exhaust shops I personally kno don't mandrel bend so I recommend getting a good downpipe.. If 450 is your firm budget then eBay wud be your best bet... U can also have it go straight out the side of your front bumper lol

Best of luck

Are there any exhaust systems that cost between $300-$400 and aren't a piece of crap?

Define peice of crap.A pipe is a pipe right depending on what the bends are done with.

Define 3-400$ turbo back vs catback.

Your pos 3-400$ ebay will preform just like a 500$ thermal catback.and might perform better, since the thermal is necked down where it bolts up to the cat.

Sound=Thermal

Pick two-cheap,performance,sound.

Look around on eBay for the SRS catbacks. They're full 3 inch, stainless steel, and can be had for $199 shipped. Best deal around IMO.

How can you say everything that's been recommended is a piece of crap? You haven't even tried anything out yet.

My exhaust cost me about $320 and is a kind of Frankenstein setup, but I'm happy with it. I got a DP from Punishment Racing, had a friend make me a test pipe (if you can't make one, they're $0-$40), and the rest was put together by a local muffler shop for me. Mandrel bent, 3", SS. I'd shoot for this option if you don't like the products avail for DSMs.

As mentioned above, Apex'i and Megan are options. From what I've heard and read, Megan is up-marketed ebay products, while Apex'i is of better quality. Not stating this as fact, as I've never tried these on a DSM, but it's the general consensus among the people I know.

But I've also read about folks with Megan- and ebay products -lasting quite a while. Sometimes auto parts are a gamble.

Thermal seems to have the best sound IMO. Their products are of a much higher price, but I think you're getting a better product (you're probably also paying a little for their name).

okay, would it be cheaper to buy an exhaust kit, or have the muffler shop make one down the street. I know you guys down know the prices of every shop, but on average which would be cheaper?

Ebay is always a good place to look if you want to be cost efficient. If price is of no concern though, I'd pick a thermal or greddy. I have a thermal r&d and I love the way it sounds.
