This should be a fairly striaght forward question. I have a 98 Spyder GST, i purchased the shell some years ago and now getting around to my project car. The engine is from a 96 Eagle TSi. I understand that if you go from a turbo to a turbo that the harness should be the same. The problem is the harness for the GST is for a auto/spyder. The Tsi tranny is a manual and it was not a convertable. I know the wiring is different from an auto to an manual, and i have no interest in "jumping the connectors" on the auto tranny plug. I would like to purchase the correct wire harness and do it cleanly. I have the option to buy a wire harness for a GST, that is not a convertable. I also have the option to buy an AWD harness, also not a convertable but they are the correct transmission (manual). My question: is the engine wire harness the same as one for the convertable and hard top? I have been told that they do vary but am unsure as to how they would be different. I believe i should be able to take a wire harness from any 2g FWD turbo/manual wire harness and put it in the spyder, i just need confermation.

Thanks for the help

98 Mitsu Eclipse Spyder GST FWD/auto (body/wire harness)
96 Talon Tsi FWD/manual (engine/tranny)

Side note:
I have no mods to my car, i just enjoyed driving it before the strut towers rusted out, hence the reason for the 98 boby and the 96 engine. I rebuilt the engine a couple of years ago after the timing belt broke and shattered my valves

If you're going from a 96 (2ga) into a 98 (2gb) the only difference other then the trans would be the Cam sensor. You WILL need the correct drive wire harness. A manual harness wont work in an auto car. The 2ga cam sensors are under the Intake cam sprocket and the 2gb's are inverted and on the end of the Intake cam (passenger side). So, if you were going to use the 2ga harness you would have to invert your plug wires. Meaning instead of the original 4123 order it would have to be 2341..

being a spyder should not matter. the top is controlled but the body control module (not sure if thats what its called on a DSM) all that matters is its from a manual tranny car and the cam sensor thats noted above.

Thank you guys for the help, I didnt think that being a spyder would change the engine harness. I didnt know that the plug order would be inverted, thanks for the heads up on that one crash. That gives me the info i needed to move forward.

An Auto harness WILL work on a Manual car... You have to short the one 2pin connector under the hood to allow starting.

I used an auto harness from a 95 gsx in my 97 gst spyder. No real issues.

I see one thing wrong in here Tom, not trying to shoot down your post though because it was helpful to the OP.

This isn't true, its not the harness wiring thats inverted for the CAS, its the ECU and CAS signal. There are TWO situations when you must swap spark plug wires and they are...
  • If you've got a '95-'96 ECU and a 1g or 2gb CAS.
  • If you've got a '95-'96 CAS and a 2gb ECU.
Neither of which have to do with the year of the car the harness came out of. Take this for example, I've got a '95 ECU, '95 M/T wiring harness, & a '97 CAS. Even with the '95 harness, I've got to swap my plug wires because the CAS signal is inverted because its on the opposite side of the motor then what the ECU expects.

Yes, good catch! I appolgize OP. The 2gb style CAS with a 2ga ECU was the situation with my buddys GSX. I did an engine swap for him not even paying attention to the cam sensor. Well long story short, I couldnt get the car to fire then a friend said "try swapping the plug wires." Sure as shit, did that and the some bi*** fired right up.

So if i'm reading this correctly, because i'm using the ECU from the 96 TSi i should not have to invert my plugs, but i should be aware of the postion on the CAS. If the CAS in its original position i would set the plugs as normal but if the CAS is under the cam gear its the 2gb style and the plugs should be inverted. Tom/Corey your posts have been very helpful, thank you.

97Gst_spyder, thank you for your post, i know its possible to use the the auto wiring harness by jumping the pins on the tranny harness but i didnt want to mess around with it. I'm planning on pulling the engine again, (new timing belt) and will clean and paint the engine bay and start fresh.

Heres a diagram so you can visualize and read when you need to swap plug wires, remember it has nothing to do with what wiring harness you have in the car.

Thanks Corey, the diagram helps to clarify it. I have placed the order for the harness, i'll let you know how it goes.
