NOx is formed when cylinder temperature is very high.
1- There is an EGR valve that takes some of the exhaust gases and recycles them back thru the throttle body [to mix with new air/fuel & be reburned]. The function of this is to cool off the cylinder chambers [the exhaust gases are inert and don't burn so they cool off the cylinders]. The EGR valve is about the size of a baseball, and has a vacuum hose connected to it. It is mounted below the throttle body, sort of next to the battery well. If it gets clogged up [which is common] then the gases don't pass thru. Sometimes the sensor valve thingy [that connects to the other end of the hose] is faulty. Sometimes the EGR valve itself is leaking [sucking air].
2- A large carbon build up in the cylinder chambers will retain heat and cause NOx from the high temperature. To remove carbon there is this stuff [Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner] that can be sprayed into the PCV valve hose and directly into the cylinders thru the spark plug holes. Someone sent me the procedure. Let me search for it................. Aah, here it is: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31089
Read all of these posts, especially 'post 27'.
After I did the procedure my NOx went down to 1/2!! BEWARE- Starting the car was a bi*** afterwards. It took over an hour [I wore down the battery twice] but eventually I got the damn car engine started.
