My car initially had 2.5" exhaust, fuel pump, boost control, boost gauge, narrowband air/fuel gauge, and a small 16g. But now that I've finally got a freshly rebuilt engine, I can start a new upgrade path. So whats the first step? Emissions removal and a new intake pipe of course!

Once I have to ability to post a tech article I will, but this will have to work for now. The emission removal seemed scary at first but it wasn't that bad. I feel a lot better now that that crap is gone and the Talon is happier too!

Here is a pic with the battery and intake removed.

Here is the charcoal canister ripe for removal.

Some of the removed vacuum lines connected to a bolt which I was able to remove. I didn't like keeping the vacuum hookups because it looks bad in my opinion. So I cut it off.

Here is my cleaned MAS, freshly oiled K&N filter, and new Dejon intake pipe. :ninja:

I rotated this bracket to give the filter something to stand on since obviously the mounts on the airbox are gone. I figured it would yield more airflow underneath the air filter and take some stress off of the coupler connections.

Here is all the crap I removed. Also it was filthy.

And finally the finished product!

Next step, new spark plugs/valve cover cleanup and cruise control removal. Still working on understanding how to remove the cruise control.

Looks good! I just did that not to long ago on my 1g too. Also I lowered my battery as well. A lil cleaner looking, not really in mine, cause I got wires everywere and looks kinda terrible, but if cleaned up right it will get there. Once again, looks good!! I also went with the Dejon pipe, but it is non recirc and not for stock MAF, just straight filter for my SD.

I was planning on relocating my battery to the trunk, but moving it down would be a lot easier and now that there is plenty of room down there.....

Ya I wanted to move mine to the trunk too, but don't have the time and resources to to it ATM. So I just took out the bottom bracket then formed the flat top tray to fit on he subframe and sit level, then used he stock hold down in one of the holes by the frame then put a nut on the bottom of the long battery hold down bolt through the same hole it is supposed to go in. If you want I may be able to snag some pictures for you later today.

Here you go man!

That's really slick. I really like the creative use of the stock battery brace. Did you make the other brace on the battery?

Since all the emissions are removed there is nothing else in the way?

I'm inspired to go for this setup now.

Thats one sexy dizzum you got there.

If your talking to me, thanks!

If your talking to the OP, he has a nice one as well, I kidna want it! :sneaky:

Thanks, and the bottom brace I reused and the hold down was reused also, both stock. I just used a longer bolt on the frame side to get it started then just put a nut on the bottom of the long hold down bolt. No, nothing else on mine seemed in the way, But the A/C lines may interfere, you can tell right above mine where they are supposed to be, but I assume if you can get them under the lines it will be all good.

Haha I used that write up too! Your were my inspiration for it 9!'clipseDOHC!!
Well that's cool! Thanks :thumb:

You can replace that whole piece with a 3/8" pipe plug to make it even cleaner.

Also you said you were trying to figure out how to eliminate the cruise control. I've done that as well, all that you need to do it right is a non-cruise throttle cable (~$50 new from JNZ, STM, or EPSI). Then you can remove the cruise control box, vacuum line, the dual throttle cables, and the other piece by the driver's side fender.

9!'clipseDOHC, your engine bay looks empty! Did you remove anything else besides the AC, emissions, and cruise control?

I'm a little nervous about removing the cruise control. I can't find a solid write up for removal on a 1g. This is the most helpful thread I've found.

Cruise control isn't mentioned in the Haynes manual its briefly mentioned in the Chilton manual but it has no pictures.

Thanks, that's the look I'm going for! As of that pic, which is 3 months old, those are pretty much the only things that I had removed. Also the solenoid pack on the firewall, and I rerouted my wiring harness. Also I looped the non-cruise throttle cable under the intake manifold, mounted my fuel injector resistor pack on the intake manifold brace, and mounted my coil pack on the driver's side motor mount.

Since that picture I switched to speed density so I removed my MAF, located my air filter in the factory SMIC location, removed a little more of my wiring harness and relocated my catch can behind the intake manifold.

looks good man. I barely fit my aem dry cone in the engine bay it's huge, but i had the injen intake pipe instead of dejon

It's very easy, the hardest part is undoing the clip that hold the throttle cable to the pedal up under the dash. Other then that just unbolt the 2 bolts holding the other end to the IM, remove the very end from the TB, unbolt the big box (3bolts), unbolt the canister with the vacuum line on it (2 bolts), and out she goes.

Hooking up the new cable is even easier, connect it to the pedal, when it enters the engine bay it goes towards the passenger's side, loop it under the IM (for a clean bay) and around up to the driver's side and back over to the TB, where you attach it and bolt it back on the top of the IM. If you need pictures or have specific questions just let me know.

That's awesome, I'm going to have to read up on the wiring harness reroute/wire tucks. 9!'clipseDOHC whats your 2 cents on power steering removal?

I think I'll have to post pics of the cruise control removal in a new thread so I can get feedback to verify that I removed everything. I'll post a link to it here once I get that far.

Thanks for all your feedback everyone!!!

I still have all my cruise control parts, I can take a quick picture of it all tomorrow so you can see everything that can come out.

I still have my power steering although the thought of removing it have been dancing around in my head for a while now. Getting rid of it would clean up that whole driver's side area; the resevior, lines, pump, bracket, and a chunk of the motor mount. If I were to remove it though I would swap to the 1.8L manual rack, not just loop the lines on the power rack. Those are my thoughts on the topic.

I read a few threads today about the power steering removal and it doesn't seem too bad. Low speed turning is much harder but high speed turning is apparently very similar. Most prefer the direct feel of the road, but they said if you plan on auto crossing, power steering is a must.

Anyways that's a bit down the road for me. I've got other stuff to do before I make my decision on that.

Yes pics are always good! Do you have any pics of your current setup?

Here is the entire Cruise Control system removed from the car (including the plug with the wires all the way to their connector). The box that mounts to the firewall is the Vacuum Pump and the unit that mounts on the drivers side is the Actuator.

Non-Cruise Control Cable install (looped under the intake manifold):

Hope this helps!
