Long story short I bought an Eagle Summit AWD with a blown trans for real cheap. I then picked up a 99 GST trans locally for 100 bucks, knowing I would either:
A. use the stock awd axles
B. buy big shaft fwd axles
or C. use my 1g 90-91 long small shaft axles

I didn't want to spend money so I went with C because I figured I can use or sell the awd axle setup and make some monies later. So I look into how to swap out the diff and it turned out to be pretty easy (automatic). I forgot that the 99 had different ratios so I had to swap the larger gear on the fwd diff to the awd diff. other than that it was cake. :hellyeah: After everything is just about done I remember I need to get the seal for the axle I bought it oem and to my dismay :ohdamn: it doesn't fit... so I scour the internets looking for an answer and realize I ####ed up haha I would have sworn someone has done but I guess it hasn't. All I could think is that I am not about to pull this shit all apart again. So I ended up going to vatozone and oreilly auto and have them look through their inventory for a seal the same size inside and a little bigger on the outside. I ended up buying Timken seal #4857 I googled it and it's for a dodge truck if I recall correctly. The inside hole is just about exactly the same and the dsm one and the outside though is different. I get home and it's too big!!! So after staring at it for a couple hours I see that on the outside end it sort of has a lip so I get a razor blade and cut off all the rubber on the outside and after putting it next to the oem and trans hole it's the right diameter!!:thumb: The way the seal is setup is that it would stick out way too much outside the trans, so what I did is with a dremel I cut the original lip for the seal (the new lip is right after the outside rubber was cut off) I drew a picture in paint I never took pictures of it because I didn't think it was gonna work haha. Anyway the orange part of the picture is the metal part and the brown part is the rubber coating on it. I've been driving it a bit as I finished it yesterday. I'll keep you guys posted hopefully it holds up and more people can get the equal length halfshaft mod done to their 2g!! :thumb:

So far no leaks the seal is holding up good!!!
No one found this helpful? Lol I thought more people would have been all over this or found this interesting.

Still no leaks/trouble. Should be good for any 2g's wanting to go through the trouble of swapping to an awd diff. and using the equal length half shafts.

This is kind of hard to follow. So you swapped an automatic awd front differential into a 99 gst transmission, and used 90-91 long small shaft axles? I didn't know it was as easy as swapping out the final drive gears on the diffs. I've had several members on here tell me you cannot use an awd differential in a fwd transmission. Maybe Twicks can chime in here. Also it would be nice if you can find a seal that fits without modification.

I did this in my 2g fwd. Its actually quite easy and there IS a seal out there that will work.

The seal is for a 91 hyundai sonata v6 manual.

I have a Mitsu Expo, I bought it with a blown auto awd trans. I swapped the auto awd front diff out of the Expo trans into a 99 gst auto transmission in order to save money on axles. What I didnt know is that the 2g dsm fwd trannys have a bigger opening for the axle seal than the awd trannys. As for the different gear ratios the 99 gst trans had a different differential gear teeth than the one out of the Expo but the gear is bolted on to the diff so I unbolted the outside gear out of both of the diffs and swapped them. They say you cant use the awd diff in a 2g fwd because of the transmission seal issue.

Good to know! Do you have the part number so if anyone wants to order it? Wish I woulda known that for my car.

The part number for the axle seal is : Pioneer part # 759042
1991 Hyundai sonata v6 manual. km177 trans.

Yes, this mod will cut down on torque steer by making both axles the same length and diameter. With the stock fwd axles one axle is longer and thicker than the other to make them act very similar under load however it still takes a bit more to twist the longer axle than it does the short one causing one wheel to break loose before the other thus ending in torque steer.

Yeah I remember changing the axels in my first 2g FWD. I know when I pulled them I was like what the hell. Who the eff would design something this retarded? and why? To save a buck? This is the dumbest axel design I have ever seen. It seem like the giant long one was just begging to be shredded.

Well that's awesome to hear that this works. It's too late for me though as I already bought and installed a Quaife LSD for the F5M33 transmission. I wanted to get the AWD differiential but was told it wouldn't work. The only issue with this mod is that the AWD axle that bolts to the block is thinner to allow transfer case clearance. This obviously makes it weaker and more likely to break.
