all i can really see in that picture is a bunch of solder and a plug, i've made these before so i might be able to help you. if you can, get some more detailed pictures up, or maybe draw out a diagram of what you've done

i dint solder yet to make sure everything was working and its the right connector just crimp style

I'm not sure you understood what I was saying about the connector.

I was trying to confirm that it was in fact a male connector and that you were trying to make a datalogging cable for a Palm PDA.

If that's correct, then the problem is as you can see, is you used the wrong pins.

its going to be used on a pda and computer i have the usb converter for the serial port though

The cables are different between those that work with a Palm and those that work with a PC. You have to pick one type and then convert using a null modem adapter and gender changer for the other or make two cables.

I'm also trying to create a DL cable for my laptop, but it won't log. I used the tutorial here, but switched the diode to pin 3 instead of two, is that right? I am also using a female connector, and a Gigaware usb to serial adapter. I tested it through Terminal(the program), and it seem like it's working, but I still can't log through palmos or jackallogger. idk, is there a specific diagram to use to make a cable for the laptop steve?

A PC Datalogger cable using a female connector looks like this.

The Palm Datalogger cable using a male connector looks like the picture I posted above.

Note that the diode changes direction relative to pins 2 and 3 between these two and the the locations of the pins on the connectors are on opposite ends. Think about how these two would look plugging into each other and you see that the wires are actually on pins 2, 3, and 5 on both connectors.

There are two type of RS-232 devices Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) and Data Communications Equipment (DCE). A PC's serial port is wired to look like a DTE and the Palm Hotsink cable as a DCE since it plugs into the PC. So a datalogger cable for a PC has to also be wired as a DCE just like the hotsink cable and the Palm version as a DTE so that it looks like the PC's serial port.

The 1G's use a non-standard data rate to communicate, if you use a USB to serial adapter it also has to support the data rate. So far only the FDDI based ones, like the Keyspan, do. The DSMLink wiki has a list of the ones people have tried. OBD2 (2G ECUs) uses a standard rate so just because it works with a 2G doesn't mean it will with a 1G.
