The Gear in the lower Right of that picture is the Oil Pump Drive gear... If this is where your leak is coming from, there is a seal behind that gear that may be this problem, the leak also may possibly be coming from the Castle Nut right above that gear, that nut has an o-ring that can leak if it is not torqued correctly (too much or too little). Hope that helps.

As for side to side play, it should have almost none since the timing belt drives this gear and has tension on it.

well it does have side to side play... when i took the timing belt off... i coul actually move it quite a bit....

Well, that is not good! It should definitely not have any play… have you checked the torque on the bolt? Could it possibly have just worked loose? If you have a spare engine, maybe that would be cheaper than replacing it, and OEM one is fairly expensive… around $200-250 last time I priced them… Good luck with the repair!

i took my castle nut off and there was no o-ring..... i put one on and it seemed to stop the oil leak

Cool! hope that was your only oil leak! The bad news is you still have the Oil Pump shaft Problem... if you take off the oil pump and open it up from behind, maybe you can find something by looking at it...loose bolts, ect.

If you do end up replacing it, make sure to use the OEM parts... expensive, but worth it in the long run... you don't want to do all that work and have a lower quality part fail and damage your engine. OMG

Anyway, Good luck with the repair...

This is absolutely HILARIOUS because I had the SAME PROBLEM few weeks ago. Oil was spraying everywhere...we cleaned everything off and had the timing cover off and watched it and I saw a tiny stream form at the seam where the pan meets the block. Well, it wasn't the pan...ended up being from the castle plug because the idiots never tightened it good enough. The rubber seal had become hard plastic.

The driven gear was also loose....it wiggled around when you touched it. Just replaced the whole damn thing and now it's golden.

would the castle nut leak only leak if the car was driven? i have a leak on that side also. i originally thougth it was my oil pan. since then i have tightened the oil pan bolts but it still leaks after i drive the car around the block. it will not leak if i start the car and just leave it idle.

You need to narrow down where it's leaking from as there are a few other places the oil could come from on the timing side. Best bet is to clean the whole side of oil if there isn't a definitive location of where the leak is coming from and then check it again when you know it will leak.
