ive always been curious about the motors that are in the evo's. the more important part is the head's i now that Mitsubishi came out with a valve timing setup for their evo motors. i am really interested in finding out if i could use a mivec head on my 1g 6 bolt block. anybody know?

I know and the answer is NO, even if you could get it to work electronically the head would still be orientated the wrong direction.

Kiggly uses Mivec on a 2G head with FP cams.
Thats interesting info Justin, I wish Kiggly would do a write-up in the tech articles on how to do the MIVEC in a 2g... I think he's asking about a Evo IX head on his 1g 6-bolt block though...

ok lets switch pace. if the mivec head will NOT fit on the 6bolt block then how possible is it to use just the valve timing components. as i understand the object on the end of the camshaft uses oil pressure to rotate the cams. what about adapting one of the components onto a 1g head? i know it sounds like a bunch of bullshit but im really interested in valve timing systems.

in that drag car picture it looks like he just has a variable cam timing cam gear. so my guess is it's just part mivec (only altering timing, not the lift).

If your wondering about the components of the Evo head there are some that will work on our motors. I'm doing a mild head build using OEM Evo IX beehive valve springs and retainers right now.

MIVEC doesn't alter lift, just timing. The cam gear uses oil pressure to advance/retard the cam timing. Oil is fed to the cam gear through the cam bearing journal to a hollow passage in the cam shaft, then through the hollow cam gear bolt and inside the cam gear.

If you want to do it you'd need to drill some passages in the head and modify your cam, or use an EVO9 cam.

You can't use an EVO9 cam because the rotation and valvetrain kinematics are wrong. This is nowhere near a plug-and-play nor will it ever be. There is custom machining to the head required and new electronics.

ok so making a 1g head have variable valve timing will take alot of machining. and everybody keep saying an evo head is orientated the wrong way. but why couldn't you run the exhaust down the firewall and the intake on the front of the motor like a srt-4 neon?

It would be very complicated. The evo head has extra oil drain passages that would need to be blocked off, and you'd have to make custom intake/exhaust/intercooler pipes, custom turbo oil feed/drain lines, turbo coolant lines, and other little things. I think it would be easier to machine extra oil passages in the stock head.

ok so if i get the electronics for the valve timing, the valve advance off of an evo camshaft and drill oil passages it might work?
