PB is some of the best stuff, let it sink in for a couple of hours (with intermediate sprays inbetween) and try loosing them with a breaker bar slowly...

That technique has never failed me once and ive seen my fair share of old rusty DSMs come by ;)







oh and definelty get new bolts after, and if you wanna take it a step further, buy a tap from any auto parts store for $5 and retap the holes for the best results :thumb:...
 
I would think that a stock exhaust manifold would not be able to be wrapped well enough to warrant doing it. You'd basically have to wrap the whole thing, and not individual runners. Why not just spend the money and get a stock heat shield? I'm sure you could find a used one for cheap, or get a nice new one for around $40 I believe.

If you don't want to do that, I'd recommend high temp paint or ceramic coating. I believe I've seen a picture of someone who wrapped a cast manifold and it just looked awful. The wrap was not tight, had gaps in it, and didn't seem like it would stay in one place.

also off topic dsm_pwr your bay is so clean and everythings gone but the engine...how do i accomplish this?

The (4) that bolt the manifold onto the turbo, those are the ones that love to break...

Although id replace the manifold to head studs as well while your at it.. just make sure to run a tap so that you get the best results...
 
^Only use OEM turbo to manifold bolts and washers (and you can get 4 bolts so you don't have to deal with the stud that's probably in there now). And each bolt requires two washers.

I would start hosing the turbo and exhaust manifold bolts/studs down a few days before you plan on removing it (a week would be great). Do it once or twice a day (or more if possible) and let them fully heat cycle. Spray them down when hot and when cold and you should be able to loosen them without a problem. Just don't force them loose as this is what causes breaking.

IMO i would personally go with a heat shield be it stock or aftermarket. you can pick one up for a song. i dislike the look of the header wrap :notgood:
 
That looks expensive haha.

The picture of the wrapped one looks like it's an FP race mani. The stock log style ones wrapped will probably look even messier. I would get a heat shield, or ceramic coat if you have some change.
