Recently just bought a 96 talon, The car has 182k miles on it, I know that won't hold up for much longer.

So im planning on buying a crate 420a engine, But i need to know wether i have a short block, Or a long block. I honestly have no idea, And if anyone knows of any websites for nice 420a crate engines, Please give me a holler or post. I was looking at

Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon - Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon 2nd Gen Non-Turbo 95-99 - Talon/Eclipse Engine, Crate Motors

But i have no idea what to get, What specs to get, Or anything. Complete tard when it comes to my car. I know general knowledge about cars, and i have a friend that knows tons so we could drop it in, with no problems. Im just wanting any and all opinions on WHICH engine to get, For my 96 Talon.

Thank youuu.

It depends on what your plans are you going turbo or N/A the whole motor is a long block you have to do some research and figure out your goals do you want a daily driver are just a weekend warrior do you plan on racing it these are all things to think about most people aren,t going to reply to such a vage question I'll be glad to answer what I can but you need to give a little better info I have had my 420a for years and love it fixing to go turbo in the next month or so got all the parts just lacking time and I probably have a few thousand hours of research so if you have any specific questions shoot me a pm

Okay well ill tighten it up, I want it to be able to handle boost, maybe a maximum of 400-500 hp, And still be fine for a daily driver. I don't want to be throwing any piston rods, So forged pistons and rods would be great. I don't want to throw a whole lot of boost into it, Maybe 8-10psi. My current engine, the stock 420a can only hold like 1-5psi ive heard, But i wouldn't trust it with mine.

So just anything thats an upgrade to be honest, Something that can handle a reasonable amount of boost. And able to be a daily driver..

250 to 300 is a DD stock 420a with a stage 2 hahn kit gets you to about 250 with 8 psi of boost. if going any higher you will require forged rods at the least stock pistons reliable up to about 325 hp from what I have researched If your motor is not blown it is cheaper to build it your self than to buy from a motor shop preassambled If going turbo you do not want a stroker motor because compression is to high a nother thing to think about is once you get up to 300 or plus hp you have to start upgrading suspension and brake components hope this helps some hit me back with any more questions

Yeah, But the car was a northern car, I don't trust the bolts to not be rusted and snap.

And it would cost me about 1200 for an engine rebuild kit, Then id have to buy forged rods, And i might as well get the pistons at the same time. So id figure close to 2,000, Unless anyone has any better sites? I just i have no idea.

Dont bump your threads. thats a good way to get suspended or booted.

I dont think you have any idea how much 400-500 hp is going to cost. Do you have goals for what e/t you want to run? plus why dont you just find a nice 4g63 car that you can put money into. its going to cost you more money to do that in a 420a car.

hell 300hp is plenty enough.

Up on the top of the screen there is drop down menu for parts.

Your not going to be able just to pull the motor tear it down and going take out the piston and just put new ones in. there is going to be some machine work involved. Then your looking at cams, bigger injectors, turbo, suspension, clutch, trans work, and something to tune with.

How do you know the motor isnt in good working order? just because it has alot of miles doesnt mean its a bad motor. Hell my neon dohc motor had over 325k before I got rid of her. check the compression see what that is. change the timing belt.

I honestly haven't done anything to or with the car yet. I haven't even driven it. The clutch slips, I need to buy one of those first.

And because i want to be different, Everyone rolls with a 4g63. I would like a 4g63, But when i got this car for the amount i paid for it, I prefer this car. The engine sounds great when i start it up, I just need to remove the heat shield. It rattles when the car gets reved to high RPMs.

And i understand Horsepower = LOTS of money.

This is jsut going to be a daily driver, That im going to make sportier. Alot sportier. Im not looking forward to breaking a land speed record, I just want it to be rediculusly fast, And not explode on me when im doing 120 across a bridge. :thumb:

I would check the compression and do the maintance. make sure every thing is okay. change the clutch and driver her. gas isnt going to be cheap like this forever...

I know what you mean, Its already jacking up. I'll have my buddy check the compression on her tomorrow, And as for the clutch, I plan on buying one within the next few weeks, Getting income tax, And when i do, Ill grab a clutch, Get her registered, And tagged.

I'll be driving her alll dayy.

She is definitely a project, The person i got it from, Cut the door handles off. He was going to shave them down, Im just going to buy new door handles at the same time as the clutch.

Have any ideas on what clutch i should get? I'll probably end up maxing the car out at 300 HP to be completely honest, And that would take a while to get there.

Im not some crazy rich guy thats going to dump 20k into my car overnight, So any standard clutch would last me, If you have any ideas/websites/prices.

I would just go to oreillys auto parts and get an oem replacment. I actually used one on on my 90 to get me through the weekend for bracket racing with 60 miles of break in on her.

no why do you need a 6 puck disc for a 420a? besides I wouldnt use a 6 puck sprung disc I would go for an unsprung clutch...

Oh yeah your going to need a pressure plate too. that is just for the clutch disc itself.

Yeah, so id probably be better off buying a clutch KIT? And not just the clutch? And i have no idea, He just told me to get that one. He knows almost nothing about DSMs, Hes running a 96 saturn sl2, LOL.

You will be okay on the stock clutch for a while. It will help you save money if you actually decide to spend the boat load of money to get the 500 hp.

My aunt is telling me to check if there is fluids in the clutch, And if theres not, I may just have to replace the master and slave cylinders. Should i check?
