2x4 engine support?

Hey guys i dont have the cash to drop for an engine support and i was wondering if any one else has heard of using a 2x4. im debating on just giving it a shot but i would like to know if anyone has tried this before and what the results were. thanks guys

I've done the same thing and it worked. Just make sure it is very centered and don't raise it too much

It's been done before don't worry. If you're lifting something like and oil pan use a phone book between the 2x4 and the object! It'll save you alot of trouble!

yeah i ALWAYS use a piece of packing foam. works very well

yeah i know about using a jack and 2x4 but im wondering about like a fender to fender type deal. my cousin said he's heard of people using a 2x4. what im looking for is a poor mans version of this Hoisting Accessories | Engine Hoists + Stands | Auto Repair | Northern Tool + Equipment

I didn't use one of those to get my engine out. I just hooked a chain between the hoist mounts (red), but left a little slack. Since I was pulling the engine and tranny, I hooked the chain from the hoist (orange) towards the rear mount along that chain.

2x4 would probably work, but I'd like a 4x4 better.
