my evo 3 16g is toast (bent shaft) so I bought a small 16g.. could I swap the turbine housing from the evo 3 to the small 16g without problems? Could I also use the evo 3 compressor housing and wheel on the small 16g? Basically I want to change the small 16g into the evo 3 using the shaft from the small 16g

If you are just looking to swap compressor covers, then yes, there should be no problem with that. You aren't going to get an evo3 efficiency without an evo3 wheel however. Though, with the larger cover, it may help the little small 16g breath a little easier.

The compressor covers are the same on both turbo's (TD05H). The difference is in the wheels. The exhaust housings are different though. You won't gain anything swaping covers. You could swap wheels, but it is highly sugested that you have the turbocharger balanced if swaping wheels. Remember these things spin at 50,000+ RPMS. The EVO3 exhaust housing is different though, its better. The EVO3 housing is a 7cm housing instead of the 6cm and will indeed "bolt" up to your small 16g. You will gain some top end output over the 6cm.

Evo3 turbine housing is a much nicer piece, run it.

Evo3 compressor housing, I wouldn't attempt to swap. No point, and it may be larger to accomidate the evo3's compressor wheel... which will kill efficency of the small 16g, unless you run the evo3 compressor wheel ,but like said, it should really be balanced after.

As far as I know, the small 16g is a 7cm^2 housing just like the evo3 piece, except the evo3 turbine housing is the "lightweight" version with a 2.5" outlet leading to the o2 housing. The volutes/AR should be the same. The turbine housing will swap, along with the turbine wheel/shaft.

The evo3 16g has a larger wheel and because of that, swapping the evo3 compressor cover will hurt efficiency as fonz454 said since the clearances will be off between the compressor and cover. The CHRA also has a larger "groove" cut into it to fit the larger diameter evo3 wheel; the evo3 wheel won't sit back far enough on the small 16g CHRA.

Swap the turbine housing if anything, especially if it came with the 6cm^2 to begin with.

Turbine housings are definitely interchangeable.

If you're thinking of using the Small 16G turbine on the Evo III center housing and compressor wheel, I would have the compressor wheel checked before you install it. Sometimes a bent turbine can cause the compressor wheel to get shaved on one side where it's barely noticeable but will throw the whole turbo out of balance....as a result, you'll bend another turbine shaft.
