turbo the n/t????

so i'am planning on buying a 93 talon, turbo awd, it starts up, barley runs for just a second, you have to rev it high, there is some smoke coming from the turbo area, smells like rich exhaust????? any ways, the guy doesnt know much about the car, says the reason it dies is a bad ecu, he also says the turbo is fine but a bad exhaust mani gasket???? it has new tires, it was a fully loaded model, im thinking about puttin the turbo engine in my car and the n/a out of mine into that one and giving it to my gf, the guy only wants 350 for the whole car. input?

If he doesn't know much about the car I wouldn't trust his diagnosis of whats wrong with the car.
 
do you think then that the turbo is bad? i dont know much about diagnosing turbo issues, i mean its dark smoke that smells like fuel, is that possibly the turbo??
 
There is a whole list of problems with those symptoms. But....
1. Does the car have any modifications
2. Have you check the plugs/wires
3. Is the timing belt correctly aligned
4. Is an o2 sensor bad
5. Is the CAS timed correctly
6. Is.....

You see, there's a few questions that need answered first.

If you want to buy it and work on it over the winter, then go for it.
