I recently bought a '96 Talon TSi with a bad motor. The girl appeared to drive it around without oil. The crank and a rod need replaced and the turbo needs rebuilt. So, instead of replacing only what has been destroyed, I am going to replace the crank, rods, pistons, and rebuild the turbo. This leads to my quesion...

I want to build a stroked engine because it shouldn't really cost much more than rebuilding with stock parts. Here are the parts I am looking to get:

Remanufactured 4G64 crankshaft with matched bearings.
Stock 1G rods.
1G stroker pistons (Ross or Wiseco).

The only reason I chose 1G rods and 1G pistons is so that no machining would be necessary for the difference in wristpin size that exists between 1G and 2G pistons. Since they are aftermarket pistons, I get to choose my compression ratio so I don't see the advantage in getting 2G specific pistons.

Can someone please verify that this combination will work? I am new to DSMs, but I am not new to engines and I am looking to the experts for some guidance. Thanks!

I don't think that's going to work like you think. Why not just stick with the 2G Rods and 2G Stroker Pistons? Your compression ratio can be chosen just the same.

I was thinking the 1G rods/pistons route because the 1G rods are heftier... just in case I decide to modify the car more in the future. That way I would have room to move up. Plus, I am doing this as a winter project... so I am on a budget.

Ehhh from what im gathering your saying using the stock 1g rods in a 2g motor?
If thats the case it wouldn't work like you'd like. The 7 bolt crank's journals are bigger than the 6 bolts. I'd reccomend you find a 6 bolt donor motor and do a 6 bolt swap. Then you could use the stock 6 bolt rods which are stronger than the 7 bolts. Theres tons of threads on the 6 bolt swap. But as to your question, in a 6 bolt motor, 4g64 crank, stock 6 bolt rods, and 1g stroker pistons would be all you'd need to stroke it. good luck and do your research.

If you use a 7 bolt block you will need to use a 7 bolt crank. Then if you want to use 6 bolt rods you will need to have them machined or you can buy them already machined for a 7 bolt crank from these guys:

Otherwise you will need 7 bolt rods and pistons. If you use a 6 bolt crank and block you won't have to do anything to run the combo you are wanting. It can all be made to work and you could do a cheap 7 bolt stroker with 6 bolt machined rods for fairly cheap that would be reasonably strong. I would only do this if you are not planning on running more that 450whp. Good luck!

Perfect! That is just the information I was looking for. Thanks guys!

So in other words... I should be able to get a set of OEM or aftermarket 2G rods and 2G stroker pistons and be good to go? I do not have high horsepower goals at all... but since I need to rebuild anyway, I figured why not upgrade for just a little more money.

Your best bet is to just go with 2G stroker setup. If you already have a 2.4L crank then you're looking at about $800 for stroker pistons, and rods for around $730 for eagle crank, if you need an OEM Reman crank you can get one for about $350 from SBR or CIMotorsports.

Wow I dont know where you've been shopping. 800 dollars for stroker pistons? They arn't anymore than any other aftermarket piston, around 430+. Also 700 dollars for rods? You can find them from 300+.

Re-read what I said...

That price is also including shipping. The other $730 was for a Eagle 4340 Stroker Crank (which I forgot to finish typing)
