I have decided to rebuild the engine in my 96 GSX. The orignal problem with the engine was a spun rod bearing on #2 cyl. I am going to do a full rebuild ( refurbish the crank and rods, and reman the head). Is there any advice that could be given to me so I have a problem free rebuild? I have rebuilt a chevy 350 but those could be rebuilt with a hammer and a cresent wrench. I am a little intimidated rebuilding this motor and could use some tips or cautions about this motor.
Thanks for any help

Are you assembling the motor or are you having some one do it for you? If your doing it yourself make sure all your measurements are within spec. There really not that hard to do if you have all the tools to do it. I currently have my motor completely apart, just got done cleaning everything today and will be putting it all back together next week.

I would suggest doing a balance shaft eliminator kit. Make sure you buy an OEM timing belt. A complete topline gasket will be fine. Just make sure everything is with in spec thats the biggest thing to keep in mind.

Cool I was planning on doing the balance shaft delete. I was thinking of having the oil holes welded and smoothed out with the delete bearing in place. I bought a new timing belt, belt tensior, and timing belt idler from the stealership. Thank you for your advice i was wondering about those topline gaskets if they were any good. How about their crankshafts? are they any good? What else do i need to know

I was actually talking to Adam from MAP (vendor on this site) he says he uses topline gaskets on his built evo so I'm sure they will work fine. There crankshafts I'm not sure about them as I'v never used there products besides there gaskets. If someone doesnt chim in here about them, just call up one of the vendors on this sit or send them a PM. They will answer any questions that you might have.

If you have any other specific questions let me know. I'm actually going to school right now for automotive and I currently have engines class, so I know quite a bit about rebuilding an engine atleast rebuilding a 4G63 as thats what I'm doing right now.

I've researched building my 7-bolt a lot and what I have come to the conclusion of is that in the end, going forged internals now will be better in the long run. If you think about it, it'll only be 2-300 dollars more for products that are WAY stronger and can take some abuse (not saying stock can't). Better to aim for power now, then bend/snap a rod one day when you have a nice power package.

Besides that, go ARP studs and bolts inside and out for everything with quality bearings and you should be set.

Good luck with the build man.

If your going thst route I would suggest getting a new crank and not having the old one turned. And make sure the shop your having your machine work done at does work on theses motors or has in the past and ask for refrences. Make sure they have a boring plate. Do a search there are a lot of horror stories on here about good money getting wasted on bad machining.

I build a 7 bolt for my 98 TSI and I got my crank rebalanced and polished. New ACL main and rod bearings, Balace shaft was eliminated, top line gasket kit, ARP Main studs, and I should of used ARP head studs but I just bought OEM ones, wich works but not as good as ARP. I think that was it cause the head was OEM brand new.. It runs awesome now thats all done. Now Im doing the same thing to my 95 GSX. good luck

mitsubishi 4G63T 2G 7Bolt
I bought a car from the auction and came in with seized engine, pulled the engine apart and found the Conrad bearing was seizing the crank shaft and all main and Conrad bearings were not in good condition, anyhow i did machined the crankshaft, balance shaft and oil pump shaft and replaced the balance shaft and oil pump shaft bearings, and got -25 acl race ser crankshaft and conrad bearings,
Cleaned up the block with sandpaper to clear all the rust and silicon from every joining part, changed valve steams and used my old valves, yes i did mixed the valves, springs, retainers, coz was my very first time and i found later on that i had to keep them in order and read alot of comments but i gave them a very good cleaning, boiled the valves, springs, spring seat in water for about 10mins and then lapped the valves very good to make good sealing, installed all the valves, using all original oem gasket kit for rebuilding, used normal new head bolts, used old main bolts and conrad bolts, i put everything back togather, and it started the first time very smooth and a good manner, i have been watching videos about first starting the engine after rebuild and they start very rough and hard, if any one need help comment me and i will help. Thanks,
My first ever rebuild came out like a dream smooth and i feel the seat 2nd gear at 3000rpm... Evo 3 gear but is RVR hyper sport gear R.

These r some photos i took while rebuilding...

I would do the same as BoostFrenzy said and go with forged internals while you're in there. That way somewhere down the line if you want more power your set. If you're on a budget then yeah oem. Or maybe very least since you'll have the engine pulled have the head ported and polished and definitely arp head bolts. Good luck on the build.

The point of bring back a 6.5 year old thread is what?

@Zubair Glad your engine build went well and fired up smooth for you.

@96BoostedGSX , I bet the OP has figured out a build by now, and Zubair has his running now.
