No Boost? Wastegate not working? =(

 I'm stumped!

I just swapped in a JDM 7-bolt from a 97 eclipse in my car a couple months ago and it runs smooth but when I go to accelerate; it doesn't feel like theres any boost. The blow off valve doesn't seem to be working at all.

The engine is stock with a 14b turbo (I think thats what it is?) and If I unplug my MAF sensor, it'll blow off.

I'm still new to turbo systems. After doing some searching though, I started to think my wastegate was bad so I applied pressure to the nipple with my air compressor and it opened. When the engine is running, the actuator arm doesn't move at all though and it doesn't open or close. (I'm pretty sure its supposed to be opening and closing) I tried bypassing the solenoid and it does the same thing. (When the car is running I don't feel any pressure coming from that hose though.)

The only sensor I don't have installed is the MDP but thats only because there isn't a spot on the JDM intake to put it.

Heres a run down:

No boost, no Blow off
- Blows off with MAF unplugged, seems to build boost
- Wastegate tested and works
- Wastegate doesn't work with engine pressure
- No MDP sensor

So now I'm thinking my MAF is bad or I need the MDP sensor but I'm pretty sure the wastegate should still be opening and closing.

I'm just not really sure. =(

I took the pressure line off at the solenoid and shot air into the line with my air compressor, It opened when I did that. It doesn't move at all when the car is running though.

If it doesn't move even when revving the car, it sounds more like a boost leak than anything else. If you aren't seeing the acceleration gain when punching the gas, and not hearing the BOV hit when off the pedal... you are seeing some kind of boost leak. Check all your IC connections and see, do some kind of boost leak test.

The wastegate opens under boost pressure, so you don't overboost and blow the turbo. If it isn't opening under normal boosting RPMs, then it isn't seeing boost.

I know what I did wrong, I hooked a vacuum line up to my wastegate. (Duh) I have the TD04HL turbo so I needed a 16G turbo kit for it to mount up to my stock sidemount, which doesn't have the little nipple like the stock one had to allow pressure to go to the wastegate.

What are some ways I can get pressure to my wastegate?

Um just put a vac line directly from your turbo to the wastegate acutator. Dont use a MBC or the stock boost controller. Just use the nipple on the turbo and go right to the actuator. (That should work, if i understand what you are asking)

That would be because he's lying.
1. there is no "JDM" eclipse motor, god I hate those 3 letters.
2. If it's off of a 97 (and his prof. says 98???) then it's a t25, not a 14b.
3. He then says "I have the TD04HL turbo" WHICH IS IT?
4. And I have no idea why he would need a 16g install kit to get his stock turbo to work....

Now that we have established this guy is just blowing smoke, lets close this one huh?

Actually I just drilled a brass nipple into the J-pipe and it seemed to have fixed my problem. I 'm under the impression that the wastegate runs off pressure, not vacuum?

Did you check that 14b exhaust housing? If it is cracked around the WG flapper area it will leak boost.

I ordered a boost leak test kit, it should be here today. I'm crossing my fingers its not.

I was told the motor I have was made in Japan, hence me calling it JDM; or Japanese Domestic Market. It's the only way I could think to describe it seeing as the turbo on it is different than most stock 4G63 turbos I've seen, I thought it was a 14b. I guess I'm wrong. Sorry If you think I'm a liar but I'm just trying to get help and describe my problem the best I can.

You supposedly ordered a boost leak tester. I'd like to see a link to this one (not sure why you would not just build one). First you said you had a 14b then a td04hl which are the numbers imprinted on the side of the turbo. Where did you get your engine from. I'll try and help you some. But right now your making yourself look like one of two things. A liar or you don't know the first thing about your car. Your talking us all in circles with your rambling and you have no idea what your saying. It makes zero sense. IF by chance you have a 14b and the motor is stock, then you more than likely have a 6 bolt, not a 7 bolt. Lets see some pics of your car, and your motor, and maybe some correct statements; then I'll believe you.
:beatentodeath:

Lay off the guy hes just a nOOb just he was asking a legitment question and if he said he ordered a BLT then maybe hes talking about a sandwich come on go easy on him

Fine, fair enough. Let's try to figure out what the hell he has first. Show us some pics of your turbo. If you ordered your motor online, send us a link. The first thing you need to figure out is what your setup is and what questions to ask.

You say "supposedly" like I would lie about ordering a boost leak tester? Why would I lie about that? That just sounds ridiculous. The motor I have is from a 97-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse and It's a 7-bolt. I know those two for a fact, whether it's "JDM" or not I don't know. Thats what the vendor told me.

I ordered my motor from Tiger Japanese; link:
Tiger Japanese Auto Parts LTD - 4G63 DOHC Engine only Turbo for Eagle Talon & Eclipse 97

That's the exact motor I have, but like I said; I already solved my problem by drilling a brass nipple into my J-Pipe and now the car runs just fine. I don't really have anymore questions to ask since my engine is running fine but after I do a boost leak test I'll report back.

I'll clear up the turbo situation, I thought I had a 14b but I guess I was wrong, I have no idea what I have on my car. It's setup exactly like the 14b but has a smaller compressor housing. On the housing it says "TD04HL, " so whatever that is; I have it.

Thanks for the help Bluefire16 & Anarchology.

Well considering the fact that you changed your statement a few times, that to me, seems like a lie. Forgive me for having an opinion. ANYWAYS, I'm glad you got your problem fixed. My 14b has TD05H on it, so if it helps for further posts, you have a stock 7 bolt with a t25 turbo. I'm trying to get you to realize that there is no such thing as a JDM eclipse. Use the search button and look for posts discussing it. There are numerous threads about it. Just trying to keep you from getting flamed but fine. Best of luck with your car. Next time do research before you start rambling.:thumb:

Crimson, just so you know some of the DSM stores do sell Boost leak testers, its funny they want like 40 or 50 bucks but i have seen them online at a couple stores. So go easy on the guy. But yes its pressure not vacuum and glad that my tid bit helped.
