Want to upgrade my turbo
Hey Guys I'm new here. I just bought a 91 Eagle Talon tsi AWD. It is all stock except for a muffler and aftermarket BOV. I'm interested in upgrading the turbo. Nothing extreme just a little more umff! Any suggestions? I want to keep if fairly stock but a new cold air intake would be good too. Can you point me in the right direction. Thanks

My best advice would be to get a better understanding of these cars. Don't upgrade the turbo until the car is ready for an upgrade. I'm guessing you want to turn up the boost as well, but before you do that you will need to take a closer look at the suggested upgrade path. There are all sorts of them on the net. Buschur, RRE, Mach V, and many more DSM sites will point you in the right direction. To begin you will most likely want to make sure that your car is in an almost perfect operating state. Fix the leaks and if you have no idea when the timing belt was changed I would suggest changing it, your other belts, water pump, and the other necessities.

Thanks for the info. The car only has 100,000 miles on it. The timing chain and belts were changed about 10,000 miles ago and the valves were all replaced at the same time. I'll definetly look into those sites to get a better understanding. This is my first import. I own a 2000 Saleen Mustang but left it in Utah when I came out here for Law School. This Talon is going to be my daily driver, thats why I don't want to do anything crazy with it, just some minor mods.

its pointless to upgrade turbo if you dont have the proper mods. I would do exhaust, intercooling piping bigger injecters and afc and it will be quick but if you want fast you will need alot more than just a turbo.

I would definately do the basic maintenance first, new plugs, plug wires, all fluids changed (transmission and differentials too), boost leak test it, compression test, and fix any issues the car may be having. Then I would go ahead with a new air intake and exhaust.

Since you have a 1g with a 14b turbo I would even suggest that you keep the turbo you have even after you've done the supporting mods for a larger turbo. A manual boost controller (along with fuel system upgrades) will allow you to turn the boost up on your 14b up to almost 20psi reliably.

This is probably what I will end up doing. Thanks for everyones advice. I will definetly be doing the basic maintenance (wires, plugs, etc). I'm not real sure how to do a boost leak test but I'll search the forums and find out. While I want my car to be fast and fun I need it to be reliable too. I don't want to get to the point where I'm fixing or replacing nearly everypart.

Just so you don't have to search: IC Pipe Tester
14b's can be pretty fun with all supporting mods and some fine AFR tuning (tuning is always the best cost effective mod, and on some motors 12.2 and 12.5 AFR's can be the difference in 20% power).
If you want something fun for the street with more umph than a 14b something like a 16g/18g or a hybrd turbo would ###### be logistically choices. (16g's are pretty cheap and very easy to install (mitsu flanges ftw), just get some bigger injectors, FPR, fuel pump, MBC+guage and something to tune the fuel with!) and My 16g puts down pretty hard @ 20psi tuned with my current mods and it's a blast to drive

My advice, just do an intake and exhaust for the car. Do all hard piping to and from the turbo. This will help prevent boost leaks and also let the air flow less restrictive. And then do a downpipe back to create a better flow again. Coming from a V8 you probably know, the more a car can breath, the more power it can generate. From there, the 14b should be great for the street after that. Just do supporting mods before even venturing into upping the boost or a bigger turbo. For a DD, a 14b with intake and exhaust and supporting mods would be fun. Not too much power to break stuff, not slow. But on an older car, you just have to watch whats going on.
On your maintenance, don't forget about the transmission fluid along with a radiator flushing. Your transmission will thank you and shift smoother and then the car will not run into a cooling problem any time soon unless something else is wrong.
Good luck man .

If you want to keep it fairly stock why would you upgrade the turbo? Thats a fairly major mod. IF you decide to go ahead with this I would recommend some engine management first. If you upgrade the wrong way you will end up with a 91 Talon Paperweight. Read through the upgrade path stuff on here, it is very helpful in letting you know what you should do and when.

yes a turbo would be great but like stated above you need to do the proper maintenance first and then get the proper mods to support the new turbo!
And welcome to the community!

Pretty much.
But I think the OP would be quite surprised at what a tuned 14b with all supporting mods would feel like over stock

If I remember correctly an extremely well tuned 14b setup can get a car into the 11s with major supporting mods and driving like a god. For the rest of us it is good for high 12s or low 13s.
