how much would this installation cost?

That kit seems to be missing a few key items...

You will need larger injectors, a new fuel pump, and some way of tuning it or atleast a retuned turbo Eprom ECU. Oh and I would sugest upgrading the exhaust to help the turbo breathe.

You wouldnt really be able to just slap all the parts in that kit on your car and drive it. It would probably run, but it would run like straight sh!t and could blow the motor, esp if you dont have turbo pistons and cams or some way to tune it and account for the NT cams, pistons, etc.

Its a lot more to consider than just bolting a turbo kit on and driving off.

Oh and to answer your question, it would take two average mechanics the better part of a full day to install that. So two guys at 8 hours each... 16 hours at $80/hour $1200+ for the install, which is more than the cost of the parts.

If it were me, Id buy a good set of tools and do the work myself, and save $1000 on labor, and spend that money on a tuning setup, injectors, exhaust and fuel pump.

That kit is crap... over-priced crap. Get a hahn kit or put one together yourself. .. oh and $1200 install is a CONSERVATIVE estimate. Considering how much is missing, and the fact you'd have to tune it with something... well you could get a shop to buy all that for you and set it up but you're looking at $2500 just to get it running well.

Either buy a hahn kit or piece one together yourself. Then do all the work yourself. Much better way to go.

alright, thanks for that. and can anyone tell me, about how long does it take to install such a kit?

Doing it yourself with no experience..... counting the trips to the store... missing items... about 15-20 hours of labor over 1-2 weeks...

Excellent and informative post, thank you very much so. The problem is, I have no prior background with cars or mechanics. Plus, my DSM is my primary vehicle, I can't be car less for more than a weekend, I'd have no way to get to school.

That being said, I'm in college right now, so I don't have a great deal of money, however I do plan on working on saving some money in order to get my slow car..."less" slow. I would really like to experience the power of a turbo in it - as I already enjoy driving it now, I'd just prefer some more "kick".

So looking at it that way, I have no choice but to pay someone to install it when I do eventually get around to purchasing such a kit...

I'll look into that alternative - I just read the whole "complete kit" on eBay, and figured it was the way to go.

You can do it in a weekend if you get someone to help you who's done it before but ONLY if you but a complete kit. (eBay kits are incomplete)... get one of these: DSM Turbo Kits - DSMtuners.com

Yeah .... that can be misleading.... plus i wouldn't trust an eBay turbo to act as a door stop... people have destroyed them within 100 miles of driving (along with their motors)... ask around I'm sure you can find something out there...

Seriously dude, why waste your time and money on a car that will be slower than a stock turbo car? Just go buy a used turbo talon and be done with it. I have bought two of them for $1500 each, and passed on two others for $1000 each. Its all about finding one in good condition that the owner needs to sell.

In the money you would have spent on a turbo kit and install ($4 grand) you could buy TWO clean, low mileage, stock dsms that would run circles around a NT with a kit.

Ok someone help me out here. :) That kit is missing.......

1. O2 housing
2. Downpipe
3. Fuel management
4. Fuel pump
5. ............

Very true... $4000 will get you a car as fast as a stock 4G63....

I like my car already, it barely has 78k miles on it. I already have a quality Kenwood stereo system in it. I've already replaced the timing belt, ECU EPROM, and various other misc. parts to keep my car up-to-date and running smoothly. It's a 5 speed manual...and what I'm getting at, is I'd prefer my reliable ride over another one with an unknown history.

That said, I admire your advice, coming from a 4G63 owner, and I'm not exactly sure how an aftermarket turbo could be slower than a stock turbo, but I do suppose that is possible.

I don't mind his input, as long as others can refrain from posting the same advice. It sounds more economical friendly, however, I want to experience turbo with the feel of that accomplishment.. that I bought and paid for a turbo system that I can be proud of. Maybe its an ego thing? I don't know, but its how I am. LOL.

True, my bad. Didnt see that notice. Just trying to help him out. For the record I have owned in my teanage years two NT 2.0 cars, so I am speaking with some experience on the subject.

But for someone with little to no mechanical experience, what else could you in good conscience recommend?

Just understand that many kits (esp on Ebay) are incomplete and will require several missing parts to run correctly, and the know how to install, troubleshoot and maintain the system.

Are these kits more "Complete"? I really know nothing about turbos and how to convert a NT to a turbo. I guess I have some homework. But thats fine, as I do have quite a while until I'll be making such a purchase.

Any advice on where to look, or where to start?

From just the basic descriptions, they still seem to be missing fuel management, and at 8-10 psi, I would think stock NT injectors would be overrun.

I think what was trying to be said was your 420a with an aftermarket turbo setup and if your engine internals are stock will not come near having the power a stock turbo 4g63 is going to have.

Ahh thanks! Then it looks like I have some more parts I'll need to eventually buy...

I got an apexi turbo back exhaust if you're interested. I'm lettin it go for 325. I have the receipt for it still and it has under 3,000 miles on it. It was on my 1G so I don't know if it'll work.

I think a few people forgot to mention. I would go with a HAHN kit or any of the other ones int eh vendors section, for alot of reasons. First off you will pay more, but in the long run you will get everything you need. Also you will get some kind of warranty on parts if something where to happen, unlike the EBAY stuff, which you will never beable to track down a vendor if you turbo would happen to fail. Also going with a repaitable shop, will get you great customer service, and with you being new to the turbocharger idea, and cars. You will greatly appeicate the knowledge of a vendor that stands by there product and also helps you with troubleshooting, or any other problems. Hahn is a very well known company, and its looks like they make just about 200hp with there stage one kit. I would look into a stage 1 kit, there alittel cheaper, and sound like they would give you just enough power to make you happy, also if you use a repaitable vendor they might work with you when you want to upgrade you system to maybe a stage 2.
