I don't even know what back surging is. Can you describe what the engine does in detail? Oh and PLEASE use regular english here. Slang makes my eyes bleed.

I'm actually experiencing this 'back surge" while cranking, myself. When I go to start the car, sometimes the car bucks and jerks really hard as I'm cranking it. The car turns over just fine, and right when it starting to fire up it jerks hard and then catches the next rev/spark and jerks hard again before firing up.

Any ideas?

That sounds like either a week starter or a bad plug...

As for the week starter the reason I say that is when it hits a compression stroke when the plug ignites the starter can not overcome this and jerks. As for the week or bad plug that speaks for itself.

That's pretty much what I wanted to hear. My first guess was my autolite copper 63's (NGK equivalent) were toast, so I'll start with the easy stuff first. Plugs, then wires, then we'll get more involved.

The reason I even bothered posting about it was just to hear some other ideas. You see, I'm VERY close to 120k on this engine so a timing job is right around the corner. I was letting my imagination run away with thought of a failing tensioner or skipped timing.

If I figure it out I'll post back.
Thanks.
