hey guys on my 95 awd tsi it grinds when going into 2nd but only at high rpm's. Is this the early stages of the synchronizers going out in 2nd gear? Is there any specific fluid that i can purchase to ease the noise of the grinding that it makes. Please help. thanks

:talon:

Generally that's what it means... You can try to put some syncroshift type fluid in it. But that's just going to be a band aid until you correct the problem. Those types of oils will wear out the syncronizers faster than a regular oil would but it might protect your hub/slider assemblies from further damage. Every time it grinds you are wearing on those sliders and the gear dog teeth. Syncronizers are cheap... Hub assemblies and gears are not so cheap. I would throw some Pennzoil Syncroshift, BG Syncromesh, or some Royal Purple Syncroshift oil in there for the time being. If you have already been running this type of oil well... you're not going to see much of a gain and your syncronizers are already on their last leg. Remember this is just a band aid fix and is not recommended to be used for long periods of time.

i think its just a DSM thing all of the DSMs i have driven grind in whatever gear (but usually 2nd)

but i changed the fluid in mine and it was a OKAY

still grinded a bit though

Are you trying to say that it's NORMAL for a DSM to grind? If that's what you're getting at, you're sorely mistaken...

DSM transmissions were never that great and plus on a 13 year old car of course the transsmisson its going to grind

but i mean if you really want to argue about this just ask and take a poll on how many people have had to FIX or REPLACE their transmissions because i have replaced mine not once but TWICE

ill have my mechanic throw in some of that bg synchromesh until i can get it fixed. anyone know how much it would cost to get that problem fixed or a price range atleast? thanks for the help.

I've also replaced mine...but it was due to a faulty TOB shattering and throwing my clutch through the bell housing...but I think it's misleading to say that ALL DSM's have faulty tranny's. ANY car that is 15 years old is bound to have problems.
