91 and 92 transfercase

91 and 92 transfercase are they the same ,i have a grinding in my 92 awd not sure if its the transfer case or center diff,if i change transfer cases would that take care of both problems, thanks
 
It's either going to be a 22 or 23 spline transfer case, you'd have to count the number of splines on the transmission output shaft, if they match, then you can use it on your car.

the grinding however, is probably not your transfer case. when does it grind?
 
A bad transfer case would sounds like a glass jar with marbles bouncing around in side. Just like if you were to blow a rearend the car kind jumps or halts/drags in motion. So probably not your transfer case
 
when i put it in gear,i bought the car and was told it was the rear end so i replaced it ,and it wasnt it......it sounds like it is coming from the center of the car ,the car will move but a loud grinding like its striped out,i bought a 91 awd but its beed sitting for 5 years brake lines are busted, i got it running changed fuel pump and gas but the motor is real sluggest ,so thought it would be better to switch parts to the 92....what if i change the trannie and transfer ,thanks for your help
 
going to try to switch them this weekend ,can i take the trannie and transfer case out together,im mech. inclined but never really worked on these cars before mostly older cars ,but i love the looks and feel of these cars and how long do you think it would take to do a switch out ,thanks
 
I have both an early 91 and a 92 Transmission/transfer case combo... they both have 22 splines.

Some cars started getting 23 splines in 1991.5, so you HAVE TO count the splines. Despite common belief, only 93 and up have 23 splines for sure. 90 always had 22 splines, and 91/92 could have either. Jack at Jack's Transmissions talked with me about this.

the rattling could be coming from anywhere... like your flywheel/clutch, or any other part of the driveline

im not sure yet input shaft is stuck in the transfer case,it is puuling out of the trannie,so im guessing i need both the trannie and transfer case,i pulled the tc,all the way over to the oil pan,its a auto by the way
 
You should be fine, count the splines to be 100% sure. I have a 90, switched over to a 91 drivetrain, and from what I remember it was only the 90 that had issues with mating with other years (and let me tell you, this isnt the only thing, I wish I woulda bought a 91.
 
but what i needed to know now is since the input shaft is coming out of the trannie when pulling the transfer case,will i need to replace the trannie too,or is that easy to fix
 
Relatively easy fix. The ball that holds the shaft into the trans has either come loose or was not reinstalled if the trans has ever been rebuilt. Really all you should have to do is take the end cover off the trans, pull the VC off the center diff, reinstall a new ball and put the VC back on. Then, put the cover back on. Done.
