I tried searching for this and didn't quite get an answer. I was having a discussion with my friend and he advised me not to install my FMIC with 2.5 inch piping. He said that it would be too much air for my basically stock GSX (3" turbo back, MBC at 15lbs, and clutch) and that installing it could cause knock to start in my engine. I know I'm running rich right now and, until I can get an AFC setup, I figured the inter-cooler would help and I could see some gains even on this setup. Is his argument valid? He also mentioned this specifically happening in winter. Though Ohio winters can be back. Thanks for the help

i would get a second opinion, your friend sounds like he has no clue

My setup is similar. Except I have 1G with a 14B. I dont have any problems with it. I know for a fact a few other people on here also have a similar setup and do not have problems.

He's full of it. You will be fine with whatever piping and whatever front mounted intercooler you want. DSMs are fuel injected, the air entering the engine is measured by the MAS and fuel is added appropriately to match the ECU's fuel tables. You can't run it lean without either changing what the sensor tells the ECU, or what the ECU tells the injectors.

Your gsx shouldnt be running rich if its on stock fuel system.

An intercooler will only help. The pipeing should be 2.5'' on a front mount.

edit: Their is no way an intercooler will cause knock.

The stock ECU map has AFR values as low as mid 9's. Pretty rich IMO.

Piping can be whatever, 2.5" is a popular size, but it's not any better than the others that are reasonably close to it in size. I really wouldn't go smaller than 2.25" or larger than 4" ever on a DSM.

Thanks guys, I knew what he was saying sounded like BS. Now does anyone know where I can get some good couplers without paying 110 bucks for 3 like they want to charge me at summit racing?

What's up man! Im in akron too, you gunna goto superfly tonight? Its at about 7 pm @ spaghetti warehouse. Me and a bunch of my friends always go. As for the couplers, if you really budgeted, goto ace hardware and get some, I used those when I put on my fmic. Snag some t bolt clamps, and you'll be fine.

I have a SBR Front Mount Intercooler (it's a HUGE bastard) and it uses 2.5 inch intercooler piping. I was running a 14b on it for a long time and never had a problem.

Don't buy some giant thick core and block all the air flow off to your radiator. Ive seen some idiots do this before.

Some people need a thicker core with more CFM flow push high boost with a big turbo, not everybody is running a stock 14b turbo. And in regards to blocking off the air flow, that's what upgraded radiators, fans, shrouds and trims are for.

I have potentially one of the largest frontmounts available for a 2g dsm that isn't' custom made and I'm running my stock radiator and 1 tiny ass slimline fan. My coolant temp rarely raises above 190. Big intercoolers aren't dumb at all, when you're running high boost you need a big intercooler to reduce intake air temps, create more dense air, reduce knock, and make more power. 2.5 inch matches to the factory throttle body if you don't intend on making massive power 2.5 is perfect for you the only negative you can get from installing a front mount is pressure drop. I'm making 514 on 2.5" pipe.

I use semi-truck radiator hose. Its about $15/ft which will give you 3-4 couplers. They are very durable and can handle 50psi. If you have a truck parts store local, they will have it.

It definitely should be quite rich if running the stock tune. Since you already have it, I'd install it for sure; if you didn't I'd suggest getting other upgrades first.

I've heard pro's and con's to bigger piping. I personally noticed a difference in part throttle response dumping my "not gonna say who's" j-pipe to SBR's j-pipe. Topend I couldn't measure a difference but part throttle oh yeah it was notieable. That was a tiny little 1.75" pipe to a 2" pipe, thats a big difference. Does anybody really think that going from 2.5" to 3" would make a measurable WOT difference at 14b or 16g power levels? Nah.

i'm in akron too - what's superfly?

is it worth seeking out 2.5 inch UICP or is the Dejon UICP that's 2.25 inches fine for a 16g?

Edit: All piping from compressor to the fender (after intercooler) is 2.5 inch, I have a 1g throttle body to put in.
