So i got a GS-t. Finally satisfying my need for spool. I was driving it home from tennesse. I live in Lake Charles. About 500 miles into the trip, i had a major problem. The car sounded like a go cart, it felt like it was bogging out, and it was literally shooting sparks and blue flames out of the exhaust. If i let it chill for a bit, then drove it, it would not do it for a mile or two, but then start again...

WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?

what type of fuel were you running...what if any are the mods/upgrades on the car...have you visually inspected for any leaks in the intake pipes...a little more info would help out alot

Could be a case of just running really rich. Check for major intake leaks like popped intercooler piping, loose bov, and the like, as well as the ignition (plugs/wires are quickest).

Yeah sounds like a bad boost leak to me too. Along with the fun and good times there are lots little things that drive you nuts with these cars. Could be a malfunctioning MAF or maybe even the ECU has some issues. Best thing to do right now would be find someone local who has a lot of experience with dsm's and have them take a look at it and see if you can re create the problem its having. Post more information about the car and the problem also and it will get you more feedback and help narrow down the problem.

sorry I had not had time to update the mods before work. I updated the profile so you can see what has been done to it. Nothing major. FMIC, BOV, exhaust. Thats about it. All on a 6 bolt too.

I was just running regular 87 with no fuel additives.

If i'm running to rich how do i correct this problem? It has a gauge to tell me but it does not seem to be working anymore?

Also I know the stock motor comes with a 14b and a popular upgrade for this car is the 16g. I have never heard of it but the guy i got the car from claims it to have a "15g" If it is the 14b safe psi would be say 10-15psi, correct?

You need to run supreme octane, however just running 87 octane ALONE will not give those problems. It isn't helping though.

Okay, I will post engine pics tomorrow. But why would the car literally be shooting flames as i'm going. Not boosting, and nonstop. It was even letting out little embers as it idled...

You must have some serious boost leaks definitely do a boost leak test, but letting out embers at idle? Wow, thats crazy.

And your car 1995-1999 came with the T-25 turbo stock, 1st gens came with the 14b.

Is it throwing a CEL code? Nobody ever stops to ask the car how it feels, they ask us to fix it. If no CEL codes, do a boost leak test. Then look elsewhere.

87 octane is, obviously, the worst fuel you can run, but it's never made my car run like that. Slower than if I had the proper gas in there? Yeah, but if DSMs shot flames when people ran 87 octane mitsubishi would be out of business.

and I'm not too sure if this helps any, but the reason I asked about the psi is because it got upwards of 20+psi. I know thats not safe at all for a stock turbo. My friend who has a heavily modded GSX says vacuum leak..

The CEL came on ONCE. Then flashed and has yet to come back on, but the problem is still there. I am not driving it until i fix it because i do not want to break anything. I still have my old n/t and haven't sold it yet so for now i guess just work out the bugs...

Is the vehicle equipped with DSMLink if so that flash of the CEL was from knock. From the lower grade octane you are running you are more prone to knock aka pre-ignition. Do not bring the car into boost until you get some decent fuel in there. But like others said boost leak test plug NGK only IMHO and a new set of wires. for the lugs I like to run BR7ES the stocking number is 5122.

What does your vacuum read at idle?

Do you happen to know what the guy who sold it had the boost set to? Because yes, that is definitely too high.

I take offense to your name. I challenge you in a fight to the death.

My guess is because you're running piss poor octane, the ECU has retarded timing far enough that you're basically pumping out gas as it's being burned which is also known as antilag. I suggest for you to fill it up with 93 if available. If not, the next best thing. Reset the ECU so it doesn't think you're still feeding it donkey piss.

Also, please don't boost when you have 87 in there. You'll be looking at destroyed pistons soon enough.

Open up the external WG and check the spring pressure. You'll have your answer soon enough. You're boosting high because either the spring is set for 20psi or there's some other anomaly with how the previous owner hooked up the WG.
