I just picked up a 1993 TSI with a 16g in it, and it smokes from the exahust mostly when im under boost. I searched couldent find a stright answer but i was thinking the valve seals are gone? The motor was rebuilt and has about 30k on it it dose have some head work done stock fuel system.

Any help would be great.

Here are some pictures of my new tsi:

Let me know what you think!

Looks nice!

White smoke while in boost likely means you're leaking oil at the turbo, probably from a cracked oil seal.

thanks.

The car only smokes when im not in boost i know its not leaking oil into the turbo ive checked. But the smoke dose smell like oil.

Yep mine did that. When The turbo seals went out. Its 2 seal on the 16G an the kit cost 100 bucks from FP. You can do it your self if you mark off the turbo parts to align them so the stay balanced. When you put it back together. other wise your going to have to send it off an it should cost about 250. To change the seals an balance it.

Start by changing your oil, use a regular oil, synthetic blends and some synthetics will cause your car to smoke at idle and puff some when you first hit boost. After that check to make sure that your crank case ventilator isn't blocked and double check that you haven't cross-threaded a spark plug.

That is one clean 1g. all you need is the panel the goes just infront of the passengers door, by the ground.

Not to scare you but white smoke could be coolant from the HG.. but 90% sure thats your turbo seals. get that checked out first. good luck

If its the turbo seals wouldnt the car smoke while im in boost? The car only smokes at idle and its a bluish whitish smoke. I plan on taking it to get looked at this weekend.

Thanks for all the help!

Does it smoke when you shift between gears and when you come to a stop?

it smokes mostly when im just at a stop and i think it dose smoke a little when i shift. I changed the oil last week and i checked the oil levels today and im about a quart and a half short. The car dosent leak anywhere so i must be burning oil right?

You got a spare turbo to put on? I would do that first to see if it's the turbo. Next do a compression test to see if its the rings. It both are ok then it's either the valve seals or guides.

It has mobile 1 10w 30 in it. Im going to have my local dsm shop take a look at it soon and i do not have an extra turbo i could swap in.

Try just parking it in your driveway for a while and leaving it idle, after 10-20 minutes how bad is the smoke? continuous steady stream that dissipates? puffs? James Bond getaway smoke? at the end of the test rev your engine just a bit, does it shoot out more smoke or less?

It smokes alot more when i rev it, and it dosent go away. But when im just crusing it dosent seem to smoke only if i floor it. From a cold startup its not bad just a puff.

wheres the turbo geting oil from? head or oil filter hosung? balance shafts? for some reason when i installed my turbo and got oil for the hosuing it smoke at idel and when under boost i got oil for the head and it went away. the reason that happened is because of not having balance shafts theres alot more oil pressure then there should be.....

First could you pls resize ## pics. Second is there oil in your intake pipe on the compressor side of the turbo?

Valve seals, without a doubt. Bad turbine / compressor seals will not cause smoke at idle unless the CHRA is being flooded with oil somehow (i.e.- kinked oil drain tube.)

Ya im thinking valve seals, but im going to go get it checked out tomorrow hopfully its not the rings. Ill let you know what they say.

Have you tried changing your oil like I mentioned? Mine did this profusely when I was using Kendall 10w40 full synthetic but I've also heard of it happening with synthetic blends and light oil. Basically when I was at idle for about 5 minutes I would just barely puff a little smoke then after that it became heavier and heavier, I would also blow smoke when I first punched the gas but it would stop when I started to hit boost. Changing your oil is easy and cheap so the worst you are out is a few bucks as compared to letting someone start to rip down your motor.

my car did the same thing check your oil line from your turbo to your oil pan
if it kinks up you will get oil all in your turbo then its going to burn oil through your exhaust
