ok i got my car runnin and it still knocks after puttin a used block in. i was told the block was in good runnin condition so i assumed it was my head. i took it to a auto parts store where this guy works n knows dsm and had him look at it. and i showed him how this 1 lifter and spring looked and we even cranked it over with out the valve cover on. dont worry i didnt have the plug wires on and also didnt have the css connected and he said all looked fine and moved fine. so he said it was a spun bearin and i was lik no it cant be. so the next day i droped the oil pan to make sure and all seem fine no movment in and sept the #1 rod. it didnt move up or down or front to back. i could only move it twords the #2 rod, the movment was not even a 32nd of a inch so i was it cant be that. the knock is to loud for that lil of a movment. so i once again think it is the head. i have a video of it here it is

YouTube - head knock

That was pretty loud. The easiest way to check for a spun rod bearing is to rev to where you hear the knock and put each plug wire when the sound goes away you found your spun rod bearing. It sounds like an exhaust puff in out to me. But its really loud. Make sure you have power steering fluid if you still have the pump on. The PS pump will make noise when its dry.

my car sounded like that once when my tranny was loose. inspect the bolts on the trans and starter, because my starter came loose and the transmission would jiggle it up and down.....

the next step would be to try a new exhaust gasket, when i was running open turbo with no downpipe my turbo didnt even make that much noise!!!

The noise is coming from one cylinder but the noise in the video sounds like an exhaust leak more than rod knock.

im almost positive its not a rod and i said the #1 rod moved less than a 32nd of a inch and that tranny thing could be a possiblity since i lost a few bolts for it. i have pic of the lifters also see hot the 1 looks dry and discolored

well i checked my lifters and 1 was cloged but that didnt fix the issue. i took the valve cover off and started it with out it on and it purred no knock what so ever i let it run for 15 sec with no knock. so i put the cover back on and the knock was back?????????? y is that?

all was good and even started it again woth the cover off but this time it knocked. and the weird thing is i can feel it in the oil pan? idk y i checked the rods and all was good. what else shall i look for??????

i took it for a spin again and and a lil bit after it stoped knockin. when i parked it i poped the hood and waited(still runnin) and no knock. but i was overheating(coolant leaked all out(fix the issue a lil to late LOL). now y would the knock go away when i was overheating?

take a short broom handle, long screw driver or any point-able solid object you can find and put it to your ear and touch it to different parts of the motor and you will be able to really hear and pin point the knock. AS for the overheating and it going away, sounds like you may just have a bad motor in general, there's a bit of burnt carbon deposit on that one cylinder in the pics (on the right side of 2nd pic), and that is kinda worrying me because usually build up like that is evenly spread through the motor or head.

Anytime you buy a used motor you should pull it apart and check it or at least replace the bearings and such just to be safe. If you just put a block in on some one's word that it was good, that would be your first mistake. ALWAYS check the part out unless the seller is going to warranty parts AND labor costs.

I don't know because a video camera doesn't really properly relay the sounds and engine makes, but my first guess is the bottom end is shot agreeable to what the first person told you..the noise may have went away because a collaped lifter finally pumped up, but what was teh overheating about? Was that an error on assembly or something going wrong?

it had overheated ### i ran out of water and as for knoise(knock) when i rev it it sounds more of a chatterin or lik sumthin rattlin around very randomly heres a link to more of what im havin issues with
