I've been searching for a number of days now and I can't seem to find a solid answer to my question. I have had my CEL on for about a year because of a "Massive Leak in my Evap System". I assumed that it had to do with my Evap Can (Charcoal canister) so I finally began to fix the problem by removing the canister. On 98-99's, the canister is behind the front bumper on the driver's side. To cut to my question, I removed the canister and now I have 2 lines left open to the atmosphere (they are the hard lines that run under the radiator and are attached in the same spot that the radiator fan bolts thread in to). They both went directly into the canister, so i assume that one is the "in" line while the other is the "out" one. Should one of these lines be vented? And also, can I just remove both of the lines all the way back to where the battery is and hang a line off to vent the fumes under my car? I hope my question is clear enough, if you need clarification, I would be happy to do that! :)

When I took all of mine out, I removed the entire lines all the way back to the firewall and just capped them off there. What little bit of driving I got to do before the rod bearing spun, there were no cel's.

Did you leave the sensor that was attached to the canister hooked up? I also read that when you cap the lines, you run the risk of causing excess pressure to accumulate in the fuel tank, did that seem to be a problem for you? Thanks for the reply! :thumb: I'll run out and start removing the lines today!

Alright it makes sense, I will pick up one of those breather filters then when I get a chance.. Thanks again!

Whenever you get this done update us on how well this works over the long run. I just recently purchased another DSM, a 98 GST so if this happens to come up I'd like to have a way to fix it. If everything turns out okay let us know! :)

Anything and everything emissions related came out. There is the one line that goes to the gas tank, I just put one of those little breather filters on it.

^^^ That's what I did too. I capped the other line.

I've had my charcoal canister removed for about 3 years, no issues.

which line did you cap and which line did you put a filter on?

I can't remember and can't see it from the engine bay because of the FMIC piping. I left both of them unplugged for a day and the one that had gas fumes coming out is the one that I put a filter on.

Honestly I was expecting like a paint can sized container. It looks more like a purge valve of some sort. And yes it is hooked up to the intake. I've also looked underneath my bumper and nothing is there.

No that is not the charcoal canister. The canister is underneath the battery mount in the LEFT hand corner of the car. it looks what you would probably expect a can about as big as a coffee can. with a few hoses coming out of it. If your car is modded it may not even have one alot of people take them off. I don't have one on my car, or any emissions for that matter. Another way to find it to is look at your fuel rail trace the fuel line where it comes out of the firewall its right in front of that. hope i help!

...here's a bigger picture so you can get a better idea where this thing is located. As you can see, it's exactly where you describe the charcoal canister to be...and it's exactly where it's at. Also, I am the second owner of this car. The first is my dad and I know for a fact he did not do crap to this car. Literally, he maybe popped the hood up a total of 20 times since he first got it in '97.

It's not there. I'm dead serious. I have looked underneath the bumper before to verify. The only thing I see on that side is the power steering lines, fog lights, canister for the A/C, the horn, and the ABS computer.

 I have no idea what that white cylindrical do-hicky thing is??? I know I don't have that. Anyone else want to chime in? I would really like to what's up with his no charcoal canister situation.

:dsm:

Hm. Well I have A/C and I know I have never seen that canister before nor is it there. As you can see in the pictures.

EDIT: I think I see actually. LOL Wow I need to get my eye's checked. Never-mind, I do have it, it was hiding in the darkness up and behind the charcoal canister.

:dsm:

Hm weird. Can you trace the hard lines that run along the firewall? Mine runs along the firewall down along the driver side of the engine bay and links up to that canister next to the power steering. Perhaps it's different for AWD and FWD?
