well, first off you can weld it, but with unlike metals there is no telling how well the bead would lay. but anyways assuming that you were able to lay a perferct bead(not saying you cant) you would probably lose flow do to turbulance from radical changes in diameter and the rough edges from welding along with the edges from the tubing. as is its not a bad looking exhaust, my suggestion would be to keep it the way it is or you might be throwing away some dough. but hey if your like me you'll try and make it better anyway to which i say right the hell on LOL

Also if you wield it up that restricts the flow a little. Not much as you can notice, but if your trying to get every bit of power out of it. It will matter. Thats why all the company's Apexi HKS an all do mitheral bends. Sorry about spelling spell check. It couldn't find the exact word I was looking for.

Well i would like to atleast replace my cat with a testpipe, that will help me wont it?

I think the word is Mandrel Bend

What are the advantages/disadvantages to having a test pipe instead of a Cat..? Besides the obvious bad emisions..

I cant think of the name of the piece, but you see where the exhaust gets bigger in some parts? Could i just cut those bigger spots out, and just weld 3" piping in its place? Will this create more power for me? I saw some 3" steel tailpipe piping at an autoparts store for like $7. Could i just weld that on there?
Yes, you can weld mild steel to stainless steel. I've done it myself. My Tsudo SS cat-back exhaust originally had a neck-down where the cat-back joined the stock cat converter. I cut it off and welded a 3" flange from RRE in it's place to match a 3" high flow cat. I have a small home shop arc welder and while my welding often isn't pretty the flange has been holding without leaks or cracks for over three years. The welds and the mild steel pipe you buy will be subject to salt and harsh Michigan winters so they'll be prone to rusting out. Rusting out is the worst downside to replacing the neck downs. An exhaust system only flows as well as the smallest restriction allows. How much more power you gain vs the rust problem will be for you to decide.

Pro and Cons of a test pipe (hollowed cat)? I hope I answered the question in this post. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/236388-hollow-cat-question.html#post50453440

An added thought: This little arc welder I bought for around $100 at Harbor Freight has paid for itself many times over with little welding jobs for me, for family and friends. I welded a cracked cast iron exhaust manifold on a Civic a few months ago. It's holding nicely and saved a young couple with little money a big repair bill. It's been a very handy tool.

Oh, and those two bigger spots are resonators.
OMG The thought never crossed my mind that someone would consider replacing the resonators with straight pipe. Now I think I see what the OP meant by "bigger spots". No, I wouldn't remove the resonators to improve performance. But my previous advice about welding to stainless has not been negated.

What do the resonators do? Just make the car sound diffrent? Or are they restrictive in any way?

I always thought most exhausts were still 3" through the resonator as well...I have never cut one off to see if its 3" inside like the rest of the exhaust?

When I bought my car it had a SS 3" exhaust from the Turbo back already on it....but mine is diffrent than my friends GS-T...My pipe goes under my rear end instead of over it...is this normal for the AWD or do I just have a different type of exhaust?

From wikipedia on resonator (Resonator): - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A resonator is one part in exhaust systems that works with the muffler to reduce noise, by making sound waves "cancel each other out"[1]. The "exhaust note" is an important feature for many vehicle owners, so both the original manufacturers and the after-market suppliers use the resonator to enhance the sound.

Resonators aren't really a restriction, but are mostly for noise reduction. If you were to cut them out and replace them with straight pipes, you wouldn't notice a difference in performance.

It is normal for your exhaust to go under the rear subframe/suspension.

I wouldnt mind the loud exhaust LOL.

How do i "cheat" the o2 sensor so the test pipe doesnt throw a CEL?

Shane

Thanks Jeff I couldn't remember the word right. Test pipe will work it frees up alot of hp, but you probably wont pass a emission test.
