Hey, I'm Stace. I have boosted my saturn, 5psi, intercooled, fabbed my own turbo mani, blew my engine up!!!

Now I have stepped up, and aquired a 91 talon awd tsi, For next to nothin! But the belt slipped, or something and well you guys must know the rest!

It gonna be my project car for the next year or so...
I got a few questions:

1- Can I use 7bolt turbo pistons in my 6 bolt block? I have a 7 bolt turbo engine laying here on the ground.
2- Can I use a N/A 6bolt head with my turbo cams?

I know there is much more to this repair, but I need some guidence for my shopping list.

Thanks
Jason

The N/T turbo head is exactly the same as the turbo except for the intake cam. The 7 bolt pistons will not fit onto the 6 bolt rods, you can have the wrist pin holes bored out to fit the 6 bolt pins but the cost and labor does not justify doing it. So just buy new 6 bolt pistons.

Just realize that 2g pistons have a 8.5:1 compression ration, whereas 1g pistons have a 7.8:1 compression ratio, and most people consider the added compression of the 2g pistons better, and 1g rods with 2g pistons is a fairly common budget upgrade. Also, if you decide to switch out your pistons, it couldn't hurt to give your block a once over, refresh the cylinders. If that's so remember to get .20 over pistons or whatever your machinist takes your cylinder walls out to.

Hehe, Ive been a regular on the turbo saturn forums for about 5 years, with the nic Stace..
But alota people seem to think i'm a girl and get confused. ASo I figure Id make a point on introducing my self with my real name. stacey Is actually my last name and what I preatty much go by in the online world and on the street.

Thanks for the info, I will be doin alot more research before I start buying. 2g pistons eh' not 6 or 7 bolt.

OK will the 7 bolt turbo head fit on a 6 bolt(since I have the 7 bolt sitting here?

Or with a little more searching I'll find a good swap guide? mabye?

2g pistions are 7 bolt pistons. But there are also 1g 7 bolt pistons which i believe are still the 7.8:1 compression. So what you're looking for are the 2g 7 bolt pistons.

The 5speed turbo intake cam and exhaust cam differs from the n/a head for 1992-1994 4g63 engines. Not just the intake. However, in your case, just swapping the intake cam is enough for you because you don't have the better 1Gb turbo cams anyway.

What year 7 bolt do you have? You can swap any 1g pistons/rods (6bolt or 7 bolt). But you can't put 2g rods or pistons in a 1g block without machine work.

Your 7-bolt head MAY need to have the headbolt holes widened. Some have enough width for the larger 6bolt headbolts. Others don't.

I dont know the exact year off hand, of the 7 bolt. It came from a 1g talon awd thowith non flipping lights, I would guess 93. He took it out cause he found a good deal on a 6bolt and had bad compression in the stock 7 bolt.

So is the 7 bolt 1g piston the same as the 2g 7bolt piston?

if so, then I could just get the 1g 7bolt pistons machined for the 6 bolt rods and it will raise my compression too?

Referring to pistons and rods as 6 bolt and 7 bolt is really confusing and not very accurate. 1gs from 1990 to some time in mid 1992 came with 6 bolts, then they changed to 7 bolts in mid 1992 I believe. Those 7 bolts still came with the bigger rods and lower 7.8:1 compression pistons. The 7 bolts in 2g's came with the smaller rods and 8.5:1 compression pistons. So to answer your question you would need to use 2g pistons with the 1g rods. I don't have any firsthand knowledge of this but I almost want to say that the rods are machined, not the pistons, although I'm not sure at all about that, its just something you might want to check out.

So mabye I should just freshen up the 1g 7bolt engine for now and slowly biuld up the 6 bolt engine for future use, mabye with better internals.

What do you mean by bigger? Do you mean stronger? I was told ALL T/E/L 7 bolt rods are weaker, 1g or 2g.

Sorry yes I meant stronger, but I wasn't aware the difference was between 6 and 7 bolts, I was always under the impression that it was generational. Sorry if I spread misinformation :coy:
