Lifter problems

Im helping a friend, he has a 97 gst and he had a lifter noise pretty annoing, then he swaped to a 1g head with 3g revised lifters and the noise still there, so he put back the stock 2g lifters and the noise still.
what can it be?

depending on how long the motor ran with the 2g head a 3g lifteres if he didnt let it run long enuf the lifters wouldnt of fully seated or sealed
