I'm sure this has been asked, but I couldn't find it. Please link to the article if you know where it is.
The story is this: if you read my other posts, you know I picked up a GST in pieces and I'm still trying to figure out what I have. I know I have a small 16g, a 6-bolt and a 7-bolt (both with heads). My plan is to put it in with the 7-bolt and build up the 6-bolt as I get the money for parts.

My question is, with the small 16g, do I need DSMlink, or should I just run stock injectors on stock boost until I get more money? I figure this build will take a lot of time anyway since I don't know what my summer job is yet, but any opinions are welcome.

I would def recommend you getting bigger injectors. There are many different EM then just link. I run Ostrich/ TunerPro (moates.net), it's very affordable and pretty easy to learn. Also, you may want to look into something like Megasquirt. If money is that big of an issue for now, you can always just get your fuel trims with a SAFC.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought Ostrich was just for 1gs. Also, just from reading, Link seems to have more control than an AFC, but that could just be bias from users (I know many people will just say "buy Link" and leave it at that...).

Do you NEED DSMLink? Do you NEED bigger injectors? The answer to both is no, but if you go that route, you NEED to keep boost to 15 psi or less. I found out my calculated IDC was 115% on a small 16g at 18 psi (2g engine).

You should be fine keeping the 16g around 15 psi or less with the stock stuff.

I have a small 16G and I'll tell ya keep it around 15PSI or youll be boostin and your fuel will cut out... It sucks!!!So definetly injectors for sure. Ive seen cheap HKS injectors for $110 through dsm tuners they start at 550 and got to 7 somthing, i forgot exactly what size.

So if I run out of funds...I can keep the 16g at stock levels and then upgrade to DSMLink and bigger injectors as I get the money? I would rather not have to buy a management system and then have to buy another one later on if I upgrade, so that's why I was assuming DSMLink would be the final product.

I just explained this in another thread, but the AFC doesn't compare to DSMLink. With the AFC, you're messing with the airflow signal... that's it. So all you get to do is fool the ECU into thinking that you're at a lower load than you really are. This has two effects: it delivers less fuel (which is the intended effect) and it gives you more timing (not the intended effect).

You can tune the car pretty good and run fast, as many have before, using an AFC, but realize that the reason they did it like that is because they didn't have these awesome options like DSMLink back then. Tom and Dave have put years of hard work into deciphering and modifying the DSM ECU to make the product that is available today.

What you are getting is a full-fledged programmable ECU. The interface was designed to be easy enough for anyone to use, and convenient by using the stock maps so that the car actually drives well right out of the box. When you adjust fuel in DSMLink, you aren't adjusting the airflow signal or the timing like you are with the AFC. You can adjust these all independently as needed. You're not hacking an input and fooling the ECU, you're actually taking the real inputs and changing the way the ECU responds to them, so you never have to guess what the values really are, because they're not hacked.

You also get a lot of extras, like the ability to datalog basically any ECU input, a stutterbox, no-lift-to-shift, and more stuff that I don't even remember because I'm still using V1. It basically has everything you'd want in a standalone while being much easier to program, and if you ask me, it's worth every penny and then some.

Another bonus with DSMLink is the forums which Tom and Dave frequent and the tech support that is provided by not only them, but the many other knowledgeable users. In fact, with all the extras it seems kind of laughable to compare DSMLink to an AFC.

PS. Money is a huge issue as I have to make sure the car is in a running condition to begin with (remember I bought it in pieces) and I only have about $2.5k to spend.

Yes, and DSMLink will let you adjust the dead time and global fuel settings to allow whatever injectors you throw in to perform just like stock injectors. You'll never be able to do that with an AFC.

Thanks, I really just want to get the car running based on what I have (which I'm not even sure yet, anyone have numbers for the stock injectors that I can compare mine to? I think they say MOL450, but I don't remember since I'm at college and the last time I looked at them was a couple weeks ago) and then if I'm missing parts I'll upgrade the supporting mods for when I upgrade my turbo. I'd rather have the supporting mods in place waiting for the turbo than the other way around.

Yea, I was planning on a fuel pump and an FMIC, it was mostly fuel that I was worried about.
Thanks though.

I haven't had time to go home and look through everything, but I'm pretty sure I have the j-pipe. The oil lines I have no idea on. I can't wait to finally go home Saturday to start tearing things apart and figuring out what I have.

Even if I don't, I'm expecting to spend money on this car. It was a steal at what I paid for it. At least I think so haha....

As I have said in my other posts, the guy I bought if from had no idea what he had, so it's really a guessing game.

Okay, well if you don't have the J-pipe, PM me because I have an RRE J-pipe and elbow pipe that goes to the stock SMIC location. I'm not using it so if you need it, I'd be willing to send it to you if you pay shipping.
