ok so i have searched the forums and could not find anything so here is what i am wondering. I want to know what i have to do to change my car over to manuel steering. i have a bad line on my rack right now so i just want to get rid of it. also what models tdo the manuel racks come on? what should i expect to pay?
 
I don't remember what cars have the rack. I put one on my 91 gsx. I read that you need a new pass side mounting bracket. There were 2 options for the pass side bracket, so I orderd both, and some new mounting bracket bushcing. It was all pretty cheap.

the difference is that pass side bracket has a p.s. line running through the bushing. The manual rack mount and bushing just doesn't have that spot for that line to run through.
 
ok. thats some thing i did not know. thanks for the good info. but i still am not sure wher i can get a manuel rack. does anybody know what models/ years they come on?
 
I payed 60$ for mine from a junk yard. I got it off of a 1992 laser 1.8, im not sure what years they came on.
 
ok awsome. i have been searching auto parts stores since i posted this and the 1.8 comes with it for sure. all years. not sure bout 2.0 nt cars. i still will loki into that a little more. does any know the weight diffrence betewwen a power and manual rack?
 
The manual rack came in some 1.8 DSM's. You can get a rebuilt one from an auto parts store or get one from a junk yard for less money. Keep in mind though that an old used one might need some new inner/outer tie rods and boots. You will need a new pass. side non-power steering rack mount and bushing. You reuse the stock driver's side one. I got mine from M&S Recycling. They are a salvage yard that specializes in DSM's. As far as weight...the manual rack is lighter because there are less components but most of the "weight reduction" comes from removing the power steering pump, fluid resevoir, and lines.
 
I got mine off a 1.8L 1991 Eclipse. They only came on the 1.8L variations. It takes a few more turns to get full lock but it isn't all that bad. I have a TRE spool in my AWD transmission and the manual steering is still very easy to handle.
 
Yeah, I think the p.s. rack is 2 1/2 turns lock to lock, and the manual rack is 4 turns lock to lock.

I got lucky with mine. a junkyard here had one off a car with less than 30k miles on it, and it looked almost new.
 
I'm looking at autozone's site now, and a manual rack for a 91 eclipse 1.8 is coming up Atsco part number 6846 for 296.99 and a 61.25 core charge, advance shows no manual rack, so they more than likely dont carry it. what about mitsubishigraveyard?
 
You guys could just convert it, lube up the piston with grease, as well as everything else that would need to. You'd also keep the good steering ratio :). Lubing the stuff up helps make it easier to turn.
