so i jhust bought my car today and decided to see what i could do to it. ima jbody guy(cavalier/sunfire) so i dont know much about dsm's i know very little i know that dsm -diamond star motors and that a plymoth laser, 1g eclipse, eagle talon are the same cars but thats about it. i bought a 97 5spd gs for 2500 bucks with a new motor and trans. and when i get my camera working again i post pics and ask a few more questions. like do dsm's get rust around the strut towers usually? i has it thats how i got him to lower the price. so far all i have for it is a swhort throw shifter and 2 chips that he gave me with it. like what motor comes in it ? i know its a 2L and thats about it. also what #'s can i expect to see if i go N/A. or should i just go for boost. so far you guys have a nice forum though.congrats on the stability and rules.

Welcome to the world of DSM's

You may want to go over those rules again because there pretty tough about grammar, spelling, capitulation, and punctuation. Also, your best chance is to probably start reading some old post and tech articles and such. There is a lot of information you can find on this site plus vfaq.com. Some others may have some more information, but I don't know too much about N/A's.

Your not going to see any impressive numbers from a 420A (your engine). They come with 140hp at the motor stock and you can do all the bolt ons that you won't but your really not going to make any power. The only way to really make a noticable and worthwhile power increase is turbo or nitrous.
And about the strut tower rust, yes DSM's are notorious for rusting strut towers.

Oh, the one you get when you divide the number of miles you went by the amount of gas you used, it's a bit impressive.

The 420A is an excellent motor. That it survives having a turbo strapped onto the side of it and being forced to breath harder and hotter by someone who's probably using the kitchen table for a work bench proves this beyond doubt. Left stock, a 420A is liable to be the last goddamned thing to break on a DSM.

welcome aboard , and sweeet deal on the DSM :) 2500 isnt that bad now go for Booost

once again congrats budd

Welcome and enjoy working on your car :). If you plan to go turbo make sure you do it right, or do it again. Work your internals then drop your turbo then work from there. If you plan on leaving it stock somethings you can add is maybe cold air intake, New spark plugs and wires. Maybe even a new coil pack. Also headers

There's so much information on this site. When I have problems, I come here first. I always get a solution from searching. You'll like it here.

Yeah this website's search button has yet to become empty after all my questions I type in the box. It's why my posts are so low at the moment LOL, I don't need to post the question here it's already asked/answered. This is by far the most active/helpful DSM Site I've came across in all my years.

If you bought a GS that means it's a NT (non-turbo) which would be a 420A motor.

Boosting is a lot of work with the 420A and some what costly plus you don't have as much potential as if you bought the turbo DSM which would be the 4G63 motor. The set up under the hood is completely turned around when you compare a NT to a turbo motor. Alot of guys with 420A's like to get nitrous for power gains, but if you're still new it's best not trying without reading up.

DSM does mean Diamond Star Motors your right on that. Diamond Star Motors is an agreement between Chrysler:talon:,Dodge:laser:, and Mitsubishi:dsm: that was made back in the '90s to produce cars under the same designs with the different make and model names. DSMs are the 2G (Second Generation) and 1G (First Generation) Mitsubishi Eclipses and Eagle Talons. DSMs also include Plymouth Lasers which were made during the 1G Eclipse and Talon production and look similar to the 1Gs. 2Gs are the 1995-1999 Eclipses and the 1995-1998 Talons. 1Gs are the 1990-1994 Talons, Eclipses, and Lasers.

Just a lil help and a bit of a intro to help you out anymore questions just ask.
