So I'm checking past threads trying to find info on socketing an eprom ecu. Is there any DIY guides available or should I chance some computer guy doing it and f@#king it up? I actually have a solid knowledge of soldering percision parts, just not computer chips. Please, any information would help.

Unless your 100% confident in your abilities and been there and done that type thing before. I would send it away as 2G eprom ECU's are getting harder to find these day's IMO. Up to yourself.

I work for a hardware development company, and I just had one of the production people change mine last week. she did an excelent job, but the one thing she noticed/pointed out that I would probably have missed, was the the board is "conformally coated", it protects the entire PWB and components from static shock and helps against corosion.
The substance is real gummy and would make removal and replacment of the part really difficult, so she used a small brush and some aceton and brushed the pins on the top and bottom to get the conformal coating away from them. I watched her do it and you could see the coating start to "gum up" and then come off. After removing the conformal coating, she used an iron and a solder sucker, and noted that it wasn't that difficult once the conformal coating was removed.

hope this helps,
Ryan

Ryan is correct that it helps to remove the conformal coating from the pins before desoldering.

The 2G traces are very thin and fragile. You need a temp controlled soldering iron to avoid burning the pads and traces off the board and all the solder needs to be removed before attempting to extract the EPROM. That usually means using both a vacuum sucker (desoldering station or handheld) and braid to go back and free each pin.

It's very easy to damage the board in the process. I get a couple a month that people tried to do themselves and damaged the ECU. Most are damaged from overheating the pad but some looked like they tried to use a crowbar to remove the chip.

If you getting your DSMLink directly from ECMTuning it makes sense to send your ECU in and let Dave do it.
