Need help with Turbo on 1996 eclipse

Hi guys, I just bought me an 1996 eclipse GST with an EVO 3 turbo. But since yesterday the turbo ffels weird. Everytime i peddal it it start rattling and goesnt give me any boost. It wont go higher that 5 pounds pressure but the turbine is on full throttle...what could it be?

Disconnect the intake pipe from the compressor inlet on the turbo (intake pipe is between the air filter and turbo), reach into the inlet, grab the nut on the center of the compressor wheel and wiggle it. If there is any in/out shaft play, the turbo is dying. There will be some side/side, but it can't be enough for the fins to touch the sides. Spin the wheel and see if it spins smoothly and freely. No in/out, a bit of side/side, and free-spin means the bearings are okay.

If that checks out, disconnect the lower intercooler pipe from the j-pipe at the compressor outlet and check for fresh oil (lower intercooler pipe connects the compressor to the intercooler). Some is normal, because it gets spat into the intake through the valve cover breather hose off of the side of the valve cover, but if your turbo seal is bad on the compressor side, oil will leak into the intake. Usually when this happens, you'll see white-blue smoke coming from the exhaust under load.

If the turbo checks out, post back. Could be a number of things, but I'd do the above first.

^That's a great place to start. You may also want to do a boost leak test. Hook up a compressor to your intake using a boost leak tester and then feel around all the couplers and connections to see or hear for any air leakage.
