yesturday i started hearing a knocking noise from the engine and today at work (i work at a garage) my boss (whose a mechanic) told me my engine was shot and i'd need a new one. we checked and there was no oil in it but i checked the oil two weeks ago and it was good. probably oil leak. im guessing that i've been driving it with low to no oil for 2 days (approx. 80 miles). is there any way i can fix the engine? i was reading the forums and a lot of people said that the knocking noise came from a spun rod (whats that mean?). i'm just hoping that there is a way to save my engine and not have to replace it because i really cant afford a new engine right now. i have a 1996 gs-t by the way incase you didnt see in my profile. so can someone please help? thanks :dsm:

You need to replace it or rebuild it, and check your turbo for shaft play, it is probably bad aslo.:laser:

You will need to rebuild it or replace it, check your turbo it is probably messed up from haveing no oil to it.:laser:

I dont know how you go 80 miles on a knocking engine and dont realize it.

For 1, dont post your thread twice.

Thats a BIG no here.

I would suggest getting out of the turbo crowd until you educate yourself on simple things like oil changes and spun bearings.

But to answer your question, youre going to need to tear down the engine to check the damage and repair whats been done. If youve been driving 80 miles without oil... it will be cheaper to replace the entire engine and turbo. With a rebuild youre looking and machining and lots of parts plus assembly.

it didnt start knocking untill last night so i've driven 30 miles since its been knocking and i know how to change my oil. i checked and the oil was perfectly fine and two weeks later there is none.

what does spun bearing mean? i've used the search bar and i cant find anything telling what it means :dsm:

On the first sign on knock, you should have shut the car off. Your oil light should have come on if you say the oil was that low, but knowing the ways these cars are tampered with by the misinformed...

Im not sure what youre trying to accomplish with this thread, your engine has major problems that require a teardown/bottom end diagnosis.

Now this is just unnecessary. You could have easily asked this in 1 of your other 2 threads about the exact same subject.

Please stop.

A spun bearing is when the bearing and crank surface lose oil pressure. The bearing will actually go metal on metal contact and spin around the crank causing surface damage that will need to be machined.

Another thing is you should have probably noticed that your oil pressure was low. But just to point out...I ran my car for maybe 2 minutes tops with a bad knock and thats only because I HAD to! no place for me to just turn off the car and coast out of the way at that time. And in those two minutes. I ruined my crankshaft completely, ruined a whole rod assembly, scratched out that newly honed cylinder and had to get rehoned to a slightly larger than rest. And that was WITH 3.6 quarts of oil in the car!!! (we found out later why). luckily everything else was ok... But I still spent another 1,000 doing a rebuild of a rebuild. The first time was like 3,000.

So it doesn't matter how long or far you say you've driven. Without tearing it down and seeing all the actual damage done especially for 30 miles PLUS the time that the car ran outside of those miles...IMO...you need a new engine...

^^ like he said in your other thread...you need to tear down the engine to see what damage has been done down there.
