OK, well I searched and I checked the links that show up when you enter in the title.

I just picked up some HKS 272's (Intake & Exhaust) from a friend. I was wondering what kind of prep that I need to do to the head before I install them.

I was thinking getting a 1G head, IM & TB, port & polish, get some 3g lifters and do upgraded springs & valves. (also open to suggestions)

Would I be able to just swap out the stock cams on the 2G head?

I think GOOD valve springs would be the best supporting mod for cams. Even though you dont' have to run them, i feel that my recent cam installation was bottlenecked by a worn set of factory springs that were new 5 years ago. I just don't think they are holding up to their duties above 7k RPM and now i wish i would have spent teh little extra on that, but i've run out till i can save up a little more in the next few pay checks.

Darren at FFWD told me this same thing when ordering them and although i knew he was right, i didn't think they would be as limiting as they are.

Well i figured that I would be limited by the stock springs, I rarely hit 6k, I'm only running the T28. I just didn't know if I would see anything worth wile if I put them in now or if I should wait until I have a head built... Or if I would damage anything by putting them in (like they warn against with the FP x series cams)

By all means throw those puppies in there! I am on stock springs and just went to the 264/272 combo and i love it. My head and intake are completely stock on a larger to4e 57 trim turbo and i saw great gains. With your smaller wuicker spooling turbo you will see a lot wider range of gains than i did just fdue to the fact that you will be moving a good bit of air a lot sooner than i can.

If you gotta do the springs later, that should be okay, but just for the PITA of pulling the cams and re-doing the timing belt again it would just be nicer to put them in with the cams.

Anyway, throw em in and don't look back, then enjoy all the added power a good set of bump sticks can bring you!

Well thanks, I'll probably do these some time soon, after I get my injectors & pump in the car & tuned. If/when I do a head job, like I said previously, it will be a 1g head; that way I have a good built head and all I have to do is swap things over to it and when I get ready to do a 6-bolt swap I'll have the head done :D

Anyone else have any useful input?

I see no need to get a 1G head, the 2G will be fine. The 272's really don't need strong valve springs, but if it gives you a larger sense of security then go ahead. I would recommend replacing the timing/balance shaft belt and water pump (if is is still original) and accessory belts since you are already tearing into it.

Since you are going to drop the cams in, I'd consider the valve springs and retainers like some of the other guys suggest, but I'd also think about swapping out the head studs for some ARPs while you are in there. Granted, you are running less power then necessary for them, it's still something that would help out in the long run.

Yea, the Timing belt wouldn't hut... but man is it a pain...

That's what I was wondering if there's a bunch of stuff I should do like springs, lifters, studs, etc I'll probably just wait and get a 1g head and have everything done then just bolt it up with the ARP & a metalic headgasket.

Ok I'll quit :beatentodeath: thanks for the tips

(but for the sake of searches please feel free to continue posting)
