Hey everyone, Ive been looking for a nice turbo upgrade for my 2g GST. A friend of mine turned me to Xs-power.com and they sell some 16g turbo kits, but i`m a little bit...cautious about these kits. Ive searched around our threads and ive been seeing some good outcomes from pipping kits and what not, but nothing about the turbos themselves. I was wondering if anyone could give an opinion on these kits i found on Xs-power.com and just give your .02 or whatever info anyone can give me. Dont want to buy a bad turbo right off the bat ya know? Thanks for any info that is given :thumb:

Here are the kits that i was liking:
DSM 1g, 2g EVO 4G63 SUPER BIG 16G EVO III TURBO KIT Mitsubishi Turbo Kits, XS Power Inc. (this one im not to sure about...Super 16g turbo? not sure about that, but it seems like a much more complete kit hhmmm )

Here is the second turbo kit i was looking at:
EVO 3 16G Ported Turbo/DSM 1G 2g Includes INSTALL KIT Turbos, XS Power Inc.

There was JUST another thread posted about ebay turbos.

Talk to Punishment Racing. They tested a lot of ebay turbos and came up with a 16g they actually now sell as the "budget" turbo and vouch for its quality.

Youre going to get a lot of kids coming on here saying things like -"Well ebay turbos are a hit and miss" and "they are crap my buddy had one and boosted 20 psi for a month and it blew up" then and "ive been running one for 6 months with no problems", etc, etc, etc....
But youll never know as for the quality because everyone drives a car different and maintains them all different. There are just too many factors to just blame the quality of the turbo.

Call up Punishment Racing.

I was cautious too, I ended up not wanting to gamble away $350 so I bought a used one in the classifieds from someone reputable. In retrospect I'm very happy I spent $300 on a genuine MHI used piece. I know of a local guy who bought a chinese 16g knockoff and his got sloppy really fast in terms of shaftplay. Some other people on here love the ebay 16g turbos though.

It seems that how you install it and what boost level you are running really determine the mileage you'll get out of these ebay sold turbos. Some people installing new turbos don't realize its best to prime the bearings on the first startup and take it easy on boosting for a few hundred miles.

I'm going to say this on behalf of every dsmtuner member that likes to drive they're car (when it runs).... BUY A GENUINE MITSUBISHI TURBO IF YOUR GETTING A 16G! Don't even bother looking into the ebay ones. I have the same turbo that punishment racing sells, yes it works fine, it was on the car when I bought it. Would I by one... NO! Punishment Racing is a great company, no discredit to there name at all. I'm just saying if your in the market for a 16g, buy genuine...

like the old saying goes.... YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

I really feel as though ALL chinese EvoIII's are made at the same place....they're just cast with different numbers on the compressor housing depending on which vendor is selling them.

Here's what happened to the last XS Power 16G I rebuilt:

The turbine shaft broke in half with less than 5000 miles on the turbo.

Another customer of mine bought a whole knockoff kit from eBay....he ran the turbo for 89miles before it developed enough shaft play for the compressor wheel to nail the housing. I thought maybe he hooked up the oil line wrong or something....but he bought one of my rebuilt MHI EvoIII 16G's and is still boosting 20psi strong to this day. Nothing else was changed!

Another problem that plagues the all knockoff 16G's is boost creep. Here's why:

The turbo comes with a 34mm flapper, but only a 22mm wastegate hole:

To cure the problem, you MUST port the wastegate hole before installation:

Great information jusmx141 , I had a feeling they just stamped the 34mm flapper on the normal 7cm housing. I have a question for you though. Have you seen any of these turbine housings crack prematurly?

Also has anyone rebuilt a chinese knockoff centercartridge with genuine MHI seals/bearings?

Do you live in a cave?

Youve never heard of one of our best vendors?

Perhaps 1gDSM4g63 was referring to XSPower. In which case, to 1gDSM, XSPower has been around for a while. Yes, they are an "ebay company" and most DSM'ers have discovered that the quality of their turbos is lacking in every aspect. Their intercooler kits are really their only redeeming product.

Ah, could be. Excuse me, I can be short tempered for ignorance. :p

The center housings of the eBay 16G's are made to MHI spec....the turbines, however, are not. If you are to rebuild an eBay EvoIII, you'll need:
-MHI turbine seals.
-MHI Thrust plate
-MHI Oil shield and collar
-MHI O-Rings (to seal compressor housing and oil shield.)
-Garrett T3 Journal Bearings.

The knockoff companies made the turbine shafts thicker to combat breakage. By doing so, a normal MHI journal bearing will not fit....you'll need to use Garrett T3 journal bearings.

Thanx for all the info you all have posted so far, if there is more info please chime in. Im also on Punishment Racing`s website and it seems like a great website, a little more trust worthy then Xs-power LOL Again thanx for all the great info everyone! :thumb:

How much more reliable are they when they have the T3 bearings? Anything else that can be done to make them work better? Is there any amount of effort that could ever make them even competitive with a MHI unit?

Whenever I rebuild these eBay turbos, I use genuine Garrett T3 BRONZE journal bearings. I've yet to have a reliability issue with any of the one's I've rebuilt, so I'm convinced that the Garrett bearings are much more durable than the soft metal these units come with from the factory.

Inferior parts put reliability in jeopardy....if you replace the cheap parts with good ones, it generally fixes the problem. The trouble is, if you buy one of these turbos new for $300 and then pay another $100 or so to upgrade the internals, you're better off buying an MHI turbo.

Great info for anyone who can rebuild a turbo. One more question, in regards to the shaft...have you observed shaft breakage after the new bearings were installed?

Generally, the shaft breakage occurred on the older Chinese knockoff units- BEFORE they were thickened and now require the T3 journal bearings. Shouldn't have to worry about it much anymore unless you're running VERY high boost or have a blowoff valve malfunction that would cause compressor surge to occur.
