if you try to turn the engine over the starter just sits and spins it does not kick out into the flywheel i have tryed 3 different staters,,,is it possibly the ignition swtich
 
Give me more info. Have you changed anything? Motor swap or tranny swap? Did you bench test the starter? Take a known good battery and a set of jumper cables. Hook the ground cable to the case of the starter. Hook the positive to the big top terminal on the starter. Then make the connections to the battery. Then take a screwdriver and jump accross the big terminal and the small spade terminal that is above it( Ithink) It will spark and arc but be carefull. Hang on to the starter. It should engage the solenoid out and make the starter spin. Do this first. If it works then you know there is a problem with the car. Take a tester and have a friend turn the key while you check the voltage at the starter. Before you hit the key you should have battery voltage at the big terminal. When you hit the key there should be close to battery voltage at the small spade terminal. Also make sure the mounting surface is clean because that is how the starter gets its ground is through the tranny. Check this and post it back and let me know what you find. Travis
 
i had all the starters i used bench tested at my local advance auto parts,,the other tests i havent tryed but yes the surface is clean,,,when i got the car all i knew it needed was an ECU,,i got one and put it in,,started the car and it worked good,well i had it running for a while and went to back out of my garage and stalled it well i found out it needed a slave cylinder,replaced it and after i stalled it was when it started doing this,,i tryed two other starters the second one started the car again,,then my friend stalled it "idiot" LOL well thats when i started doing it again and its been just spinning ever since..no motor swap no tranny swap,,had clutch repaced that was it..thanks. Check to see if you knocked some teath off the ring gear.

That is one point I dint think of. Put the car in gear and rock it forward to try to get the motor to turn over a bit. Then hit the key and see if starts. If it does then you may have some teeth missing on the flywheel which means you will need a new flywheel which would suck.
 
well i just recently changed the waterpump,,,when the belts were off i crawled under and took the bolts out of the shield and had my buddy spin the engine over while i checked the flywheel they were all good,,,its confusing LOL
 
i took a multimeter and hooked it on the ignition wire that goes on the starter and it read 12.6
 
could you have possibly lost some shims or washers? if it's testing good and you hear it turn evrytime you crank it , then id say it's not lining up right or tightly.. teeth wise. if it doesnt spin every time .. check the fuses.. snug? clean the connection .. battery and starter sides .. possibly just need to change cables. hope it helps.. good luck.
