In my other thread, the tune-up one, some people suggested replacing my idlers. I have a mitsu eclipse GS-T 1991 [FWD]. I was wondering if anyone could help me out, or point me in the right direction. I have no previous experience working with cars, except helping my Dad out with other cars. Is this simple to do? Should I hire a mechanic? Thanks in advance guys!

The parts they are most likely referring to are the idler and tensioner pulleys in the timing belt assembly. If your going to replace everything you should read the how to on Vfaq. Timing Belt VFAQ (Timing Belt TSB - ENHANCED)

If you can afford it replace the tensioner, tensioner pully and idler pully in the timing belt tract. Cange the belt as well and you wont' have to even look under there for around 60k miles.

Another one that wears out is the AC compressor tensioner pulley, mine's worn out but they want 130 for the pully alone, that doesn't include the arm. So i did the timing related stuff and will get the AC one when i'm back to working 60-70 hour weeks by next month. Untill then I'll just run wihtout AC, since it's been averaging about 15 degrees here and is probably going to stay that way for another 2 weeks. I hate the cold!

I replaced the tensioner, timing belt, balance shaft belt, water pump, etc. But I didnt do the job. My mechanic is working on it as we speak. But I was considering working with the idlers if it was an easy install. From what I can see, its not. Should I really consider changing these?

Tomorow I'm going to stop by the workshop. If the engine is still opened up, I'll try to buy the idlers and give it to him. I'll let you guys know how it went. Thanks!

Stopped by the workshop. He has yet to begin working on my car, so I'm just in time ;) He said he'd check each pulley [idler, tensioner, etc.] and replace if necesary. I saw how uncomfortable it would be if I had decided to put in the timing belt, balance shaft belt, etc. by my self. It is a very SMALL space.
