Ok here is the deal. decided to bolt on some stuff before i swap my six bolt in. its a 96 awd. It has a built 7 bolt in it now. GOt done puting a big front mount on and replaced the timing belt while i was at it. SO we took it done the road the first time we blew a intercooler pipe loose. We came back got that taken care of when up the road punch it in first built boost up to 14lb(thats what its set at), shifting to second then everything went to hell! THE tach did a complete turn, the check engine light came on, and then the car died. after popping the hood couldn't find anything wrong. So i tried to start it again, this time the car turns over fine but it acts like there is no spark. So its got to be electrial anyone have any ideas? crank sensor? coiles fried? le me know if you have any ideas.
UPDATE: IM getting spark(fried coil is rulled out)
Also i wanted to say that I was having horrible idle surge prior to this. Tommorrow i will be checking to make sure i am getting fuel to each cylinder. Does anyone know why the tach would go crazy like that? I mean it almost went all the way around when this happened. The car now just cranks and cranks but i am not getting any combustion at all, it doesn't sputter one bit. The ecu smells fine. ALso how can i test the resistor box? Do you guys think it is the crank sensor in anyway?

try checking the ecu. Turn the key to the on postion the check engine light should come on for around 5-10 secs then turn off. IF not pull the ecu and open it checking for a rancid smell.

Yea i would go based of off what happen, just completely dieing, the ecu took a dump. Check that out. If it seems fine and your CEL does in fact come on, find the coil pack and transistor, and check the ohms in those.

thats what im doing today last night we worked on it for about twelve hours we were tired and didn't feel like messing with it anymore. I dont think its the ecu cause it still turns over. The check engine light is on. I am just wandering what made the tach spin all the way around?

Going b the fact that you tach spun all the way around I would check the transistor pack as when they go bad the tach readings are all over the place.

I would check to see if I get spark and fuel first. If you do, then check compression, you could have jumped timing and bent valves after the timing belt change. I'm not sure why the tachometer was acting up.

I checked time it was dead on, so i didn't jump time. That was my biggest fear when it happen. Do you think it could be the crank sensor? i will check the resitor box tommorrow, like i said we were tired and just didn't feel like messing with it anymore. I have had to do so many things to this car to get it running right the kid before who had it was a redneck and did it the redneck way to top it off! he unhooked the heater core, the power steering, the air conditioning, had the fans hot wired, had the aftermarket and boost gauge wires ran thru the fender then thru the door LOL, also he tapped into the ebrake switch line i am still trying to figure that one out. If i could i would like to get just a whole new wiring harness for it not that it needs it. I still need the power steering bracket and someone to tell me how to hook up the heater coil wires he has them all messed up! I hope the Ecu Isn't fubared but it could be i just thought i would of smelled a electrial smell when it happen but i never did. thanks for the help guys its much appreciated if you guys have any other input or know where to get those parts let me know.

im doing that tommorrow. the car is not at my house its at my buddies garage at his house. I can almost gurantee there is not spark but i will let you know for sure here tommorrow.

ok so i checked it today. I got fire across all four cylinders. SO that rules out a burnt coil(s) the ecu does not smell like its fried, its getting fuel. So it looks like where back to the drawing board. The fuel has been sitting in the car for like 2 years but i would think it would still be alright. Im getting frustrated with this thing. All the vaccum lines are hooked up right.

I also should say when i start it it just keeps on turning over. It is not acting like its getting any spark its just a constant noise, no sputtering like only one cylinder would be getting fire. Im wandering if maybe the fuel got condisation in it over the years and that could be why its not starting? i am going to throw some ether in the intake and see what happens. So come on you DSM Gurus i know your out there. Surely im not the only person who has had this problem.

also one more thing i did forget to mention i was having idle surge prior to this when i started the car up. I see there is a other post from a guy that is pretty much having the exact same problem as me.

You should take a look at all your connections. Make sure the grounds are ran correctly, if there was a redneck before you he probably tried to ground something out the wrong way.

it sounds to me like one of the other posters is right. You have a bad fuel injetor resistor pack, did you check and see if the injectors are squirting fuel? If not do that next and if they are not thats your problem right there and they are cheap and easy to change.

no i have been running short on time so that will be what i do next. I know the fuel pump is working. i am going with a new fuel filter, putting some ice out in the tank just to make sure thats not the problem, and checking the injectors. The way i look at it before long every part on the car will be new LOL. will a resistor box work from a first gen?
