I'm rebuilding my head. I'm trying to find out are the stock valves strong enough to handle 500ish hp? or do i need to get some ss ones? I've been searching and some say no and some say yes. Then there were a few that were saying stock replacement valves are ss valves. I plan to be using some 280's for cams and revving to 8k if that helps any.

If you aren't going to be revving the crap out of your engine then you'll be ok, if your going to be revving to the moon then you should REALLY think about upgrading your springs and getting some lighter retainers.
What turbo do you plan on running?

I plan on running a hx40 with a bit of n2o. So you're saying i can run 280's with stock springs and retainers up to 8 grand?

It's not recommended to run 280's on stock valve train. With 272's you can but with the 280's you should upgrade. Brian Crower has a single spring and Ti Retainer kit that won't break your wallet.

SS valves can handle heat alot better than stock valves, since you are running n2o then you should upgrade your valves to SS.
If you look on ebay there is a guy that sells a kit for 4g63 heads. Includes SS valves, Manganese valve guides and 3g lifters (stops the ticking). Great feedback and some people have used his valves before here on tuners and have no complaints.

If you going to be doing all of that why not have a head that can handle it? IF you are running 8 grand you will need biggers cams or once it hit 7 grand you will just plateu. Therefore if you need bigger cams 280's, even 272 are not recomended with stock springs. SO save yourself and do it right build the head. SS valves can be obtained for a descent price off ebay. I have a set of 3g lifter if your interested. ALso you can get a set of crower springs for 200 bucks. You should have less then, 800 dollars in all your parts. Do it now and instead of regreting it later!
