Looking to get a NICER car than the 96 Lumina that's currently falling apart on me.

Went to a used car lot this past saturday and saw a 98 Eclipse RS and the salesman made a remark to pull my uneducated dad in, mentioning how the Japanese motor would last about 300K miles, as it was at 115K currently. After finding out it was a Chrysler motor, and having heard very un-flattering things about Chrylser that same day,

my question is does anybody know how many mile's I'm looking at getting out of this thing?

I apologize if this was somewhere else on the site, but It's late and I couldn't find a topic that answered my question

There was an article in my local paper not to long ago about a man with a mid 90 civic put a million miles on his car driving from state to state on business trips and had replaced the timing belt 12 times, water pump 6 times and a whole bunch of other things. And about 9- 10 months ago a woman with a volvo put like 500,000 miles on her car in my area. You can make anything last. I cant believe my car has lasted me this long, and im on 200,000 soon.

I wouldn't necessarily bash Neon motors either. When I was stationed in Germany I helped my friend buy a base model 96 neon. The car didn't even have a radio. That didn't stop him from beating the piss out of it. Nothing like the feeling of sheer terror of going around a long sweeper on OEM tires and 13" steelies at a 116mph on the autobahn. This is normal for him we've spent hours on roadtrips at 116 and not even a hiccup. I couple years after I got out I called him up and even after wrecking the car (not his fault he claims) he still had it and the original motor, no major mechanicals just regular maintenance. Ever since then I've had an incredible amount of respectf for that Neon powertrain, you can keep the rest though.

It's a car salesman trying to get your money. Why would you, or more especially your dad, listen to anything the sack of shit has to say?
If you like the car -and once you find out about turbocharging and all-wheel drive, you may not as much- have your mechanic look it over, and listen to what he says. But not the lickspittle greasebrain trying to sell you the car.

If you're getting the car for dependable use, good gas mileage and good looks (and low insurance rates), you'll be fine with it. If you're wanting more performance, you'll spend all your time in it in a state of envy.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Defiant hit the nail on the head with that one.

Thanks. I'm not too educated in cars, and the people around me are prejudiced against Chrysler, so I was just hoping that acknowledging my inexperience someone would assure me whether or not I was looking at a dependable car at least.

if it'll require more maintenance than my current weekly flush-and-fill for the Lumina, i won't be getting it... Parents wouldn't hand over the money.

But yeah, thanks for replying.

Well, I'm at the far end of the spectrum of dsm experience or knowledge, or lack thereof, but thanks for the reply and I'll be seeing about the car wednesday.
