i have already seen threads on starter problems and my problem isnt in there,,,after i got my car about a month ago i put a comp in it,,the kid who had it before said he had installed a new clutch,,so i put the comp in started it everything was great i tryed to put it in gear and it grinded in and i went to pull out and it stalled (my fault not use to the clutch) well i went to start it again and the bendix didnt pop out it was jus grinding on the side of the flywheel,we i went and bought a new starter, put it in same thing, got another new one, same thing,,so i went and bought a starter for a 1.8 bolted it up and it worked but it grinded to hell and back but it still did the job,,i shut the car off went to start it again and it started its games again grinding off the flywheel....can somebody please help me figure this out..

wait so let me get this straight you used a started for a 4g37 (1.8) on a 4g63t the 4g37 has a different starter and different flywheel along with a dif tranny and bellhousing. you need either a turbo fwd or awd started depending on your application id also check the flywheel too to make sure its alive if it was grinding that much

i checked the flywheel its in good shape and it confused me when it actually worked with the 1.8 starter they have the same mounting holes, and wire setup its jus that the bendix housing was a little narrower,,and the grinding sounded like the flywheel hitting the starter LOL didnt care to much there my starters are free now,,,but even at that i jus dont know whats happening

good thing the flywheels ok thats a fun job ripping the tranny out and the clutch off to replace it especially if your awd

fwd thank goodness in some ways LOL but thats about what i am ready to do is pull the tranny i really dont want to right now ### i dont have a heated garage LOL and its dirt floor for now,,,,but i am just so confused on what the prob is

put in a turbo fwd starter probably will take care of it since you said the flywheel is still good the only prob is the 1.8 starter its too far different

i have tryed two fwd turbo starters and they jus grinded the flywheel and didnt engage into the flywheel teeth

sounds like flywheel teeth may be ground off but appear to be good still id try to get a look at the teeth on another one and then comapre it to yours. or maybe its the wrong flywheel??

see my buddy was saying that the only diff between flywheels i know is awd is like an inch smaller but thats the only one i know

nt 4g63 flywheels are smaller than the turbo and yes the awd flywheel is a little smaller to make room for the output shaft for the transfer case, and the 1.8 flywheel is smaller yet because the 1.8 has no balls and is a crappy saturn motor:beatentodeath:

like one of my previous posts i didnt have it started when i first got the car i had no probs

i think size is the only difference but if its only a little bit undersized it would slowly grind it off till it started to just grind hardcore like it is now. same as like a sprocket on a motorcycle that wears down and just suddenly slips
