OK So I started my talon today and after its warm up routine (sitting at about 1800-2000 RPMs for about 3-4 minutes) I started driving off and at around 3000-3250 RPMs the car started making this wierd buzzing sound, in the car it sounds like it is coming from the passenger side, Ive searched for this on the forums and for the most part everyone says its a heat shield, however my car has no heat shield around the exhaust mani. The car is a 92 2.0 N/T it was blown up at around 120K and the head was rebuilt because the bottom end was fine according to the mechanic the car now has 13-14,000 miles on the "rebuild" I read on another post with a car reacting the same way and someone said the balance shaft belt may be to blaim I have not gone inside to have a look see if it still has said belt, also the cars power steering went out about a couple weeks ago I have not been able to fix this problem due to $ constraints. So my question is could that be the balance shaft belt? and if so can I just remove the balance shaft belt? Or do I have to do the entire balance shaft removal? I would like to keep the $ for fixing this problem as low as possible, but I fear to drive the car in case it is something serious (which Ive heard balance shafts are a BIG problem) and I dont mind some vibrations so I was thinking of doing the removal anyway

Update: it also smells like burning oil and is very dogish while driving. I checked the oil and the level seemed fine but it hasnt sounded like or smelled like this before, and I havent changed the oil that will be coming up soon though.

kk I checked the plugs the plugs look fine theyre the 4 tip plugs but are brand new looking, I will change to the "good" plugs soon. I started it up again and it sounds kinda like a chainsaw around the intake manifold area I cant look too awful close its very cold and I dont have that much light anymore but the sound goes up with the revs it sounds faster then the RPMs also I noticed a couple days ago that the oil pressure fluctuates alot when I start it up it will stay low untill the revs are increased then when driving the pressure stabilizes a little above half way but only when there is adequate RPMs

How long since the timing belt tensioner has been changed? I know my 1g freaked out before and made that weird noise, I did a timing belt job on it with a new tentioner and wham, it was gone. I dont know what was causing the noise though, whether it was the tensioner, the b-shaft belt, or the timing belt itself. But I described it the same way you just did.

If the tensioner is bad and letting the belt slack up the timing could have been thrown off a tooth or something, you say its real sluggish right?

Ok so ill give a little back story hope I didnt funk anything up with what happened yesterday, I was getting onto a local highway and I was in 3rd going to shift into 4th it didnt shift but instead dropped into second and jumped to around 9000 Rpms I pushed in the clutch and jumped to 5th. ran fine the rest of the day and this morning I started it up this afternoon and it pulled that stuff, and as far as I know the tensioner was replaced with the head rebuild

Ive never heard what a spun rod bearing sounds like, but I beleive its not a bearing issue because it sounds like its in the top end

something like this?? Just not as high pitched?

Sorry to hear that. It looks like its time to figure what to do next. That rebuild could be costly. Unless you are a skilled mechanic you may just want to sell and buy a turbo car if that's the direction you were heading anyways. Or keep it for parts, you can never have enough. Best of luck.

I have a 2nd 93 dsm parts car also and a 06 nissan altima but you believe it needs a rebuild?

I looked up a couple spun rod bearings on you tube and they sounded alot different I hope it isnt but I do have other cars so its ok in a way if it is

well an update, kinda so Im gonna go ahead and pull it into my shop for the winter use my 06 altima as my DD gonna pull front clip off of the 93, go through that I know its a 1g 7bolt, and pull the engine and tranny from my 92 talon find out if its a 6 bolt or 7 bolt. If its a 7 bolt also Ill use the head off that and rebuild the bottom end properly on one of the blocks doesnt matter which if theyre both 7 bolts, but if the 92 is a 6 bolt then ill rebuild that properly

That videos is when i spun the rear balance shaft bearing. And the front one well it was seized and then after i got that all taken care of the oil pump went and all the bearings are fried in the bottom end.I would recommend not driving it till you take it apart

so its not a spun rod bearing? its a balance shaft situation? well thats kinda reassuring I WAS planning on removing the balance shafts.

if the sounds get louder when you accelerate then most likely you have a spun bearing. you can also check by pulling your oil dipstick, and shining a flash light on the oil, if you see shiny reflections then its a spun bearing(oil shavings) usually though you will know when you have a spun bearing, it sounds really really loud, take it to a shop, and tell them to pull your pan,

not a guaranteed way to check it. I didn't have any metal shavings in my oil or on the dip stick the entire bearing was sitting in the oil pan split and folded in half...Just take the oil pan off and check it...you may not need to rebuild it..and i would recommend checking the oil pump if the rear balance shaft spun a bearing. Just saying from experience apparently it puts a little more stress on the pump :p

Don't drive it, I'm also speaking from experience. Upon disassembly there were metal flakes EVERYWHERE. I had to use pliers to remove the lash adjusters(lifters) from them binding. All the bearings had a rough texture to them. It will quickly clog the oil filter and cause the bypass valve to open, sending dirty oil through your engine. In my case it was a balance shaft bearing. What you are describing sounds very similar.

well I plan on pulling it apart to throw in the balance shaft eliminator kit new balance shaft bearings and check out the condition of the rest of the engine dropping the pan spinning it over by hand checking to see if theres even a belt on there anymore etc etc. hopefully I didnt screw anything up to bad
