Stripped stud. what to do?

So the stud from the turbine housing to the 02 housing is stripped. would it be ok to just run the other three bolts? because i can't seem to get it out and i really don't think it will make much difference.
 
As was said before, try vise grips. If that doesn't work cut and drill it out. Depending on the level of damage you can try a couple options:

1. If the stud was a cheap low-grade replacement then there may have been no damage the to the threads on the housing. You could chase it with with the correct size tap and be sure to use the correct grade bolt and and anit-seize.

2. If the threads in the housing are damaged, drill it out and tap to the next size up. Personally, I would not try helicoiling something that gets that hot and deals with that much temperature change.

3. The third and best option, time to upgrade. I picked up an EVO III exhaust manifold, big 16g and O2 housing on craigslist in great shape in Seattle for $300:D

If you're in a pinch, you could probably get away with 3 bolts. There will definatley be some exhaust leak noise, it's gonna sound like crap. I wouldn't try going very far, Put enough heat cycles on the other 3 and you're going snap/seize the others from the stress. If Mitsubishi could get away with only three bolts they would have. PB Blaster has cured these problems for me in the past. On my studs I sprayed them 2-3 times a day before I upgraded my turbo and it worked great. It may be all you need to lossen it up enough to get the vise grips to work. You could also trying welding a nut to the stud and backing it out with a wrench.
 
Sorry I'm at work, didn't see your reply before I finished my post. If you have a propane torch you try some heat. It may take a while considering how much thermal mass is there.

This is my vote as well if the penetrating oil hasn't seemed to touch it, heat can work miracles. Also welding on a nut has helped me many times in removing studs. However, I'm assuming the threads are already ruined from the vice grips?
 
Good info here... Use teh PB blaster ( eveeryone should have a can ) and then add some heat. If you have access to a MIG ot ARC welder, weld a large nut on there to give you something to grip. If you can't get it out still, or th threads are mangled, head to a machine shop, have them drill it out and put a heli-coil in it. YOu'll be good to go!

If you can get a mig or tig to weld a nut on it I have found that the heat from the welding will catalize the rust and if let cool completly you can back the stud right out. I have taken at least two head studs that were snapped off in the head out this way.
 
I'd like some clarification. Is the stud stripped out where the nut's threads were or within the housing (the stud turns inside the housing but doesn't come out)?

I like all of the suggestions so far. You should always use PB Blaster™ before you try taking any large bolt/nut/stud out. It's as valuable as a 10mm wrench for these cars.

I think you should try all of the suggestions and fix it rather than giving up and living with exhaust leaks and possibly overstressing/fatigueing/breaking the remaining bolts.
 
I think he is talking about the stud is stuck in the o2 housing by rust and wont turn at all. The outside of the stud is striped so he cant thread the nut back on it .

If you didn't go that far into ripping your car apart, put whatever back together. Spray HELL on the nut with PB blaster then turn your car on. Let that mother warm up, shut the car off then put some gloves on and BAM! Got it, no torches required.

This is an extra turbine housing i have that i am porting, so it never came off the car.
