On the highway the car will vent some hot air inside and along with that some fumes. I'm guessing it's exhuast but it stinks and is strong. Gives my tongue a numb feeling sometimes. Anyway, what's prone to leaking that will make this?

Anyone experience this?

Did you take out the charcole canister? If so there's a hose that vents gas fumes to your engine bay, you can attach a hose to it and run it further under the car and it should help from what I hear..

Do you have a filter on your crankcase breather? If so it may be fumes leaking into the motor from there. I've had this happen. Put a g2 filter on and put it to run back into the intake pipe smell went away.

Good questions, helps me narrow it down.

I do have a oil catch can on the valve cover if that's what you mean by crankcase.

As for the charcol canister, hmm.. maybe. I did do the EGR block off mod and capped off the vacuum lines on the intake manifold. But I couldn't take the charcoal canister out because I can't get that dang battery tray off. That bolt in the middle just twist and twists, even when I hold the nut below it! So the lines are venting still, maybe the case?

Maybe??? I'm not really sure, I know I've read about people extending that hose and it helping out tremendously though.. Just a thought, I'm not really sure if it would be venting if you havent completely removed the canister though?? Hopefully someone will chime in.

The bottom hose is still on it so it's getting filtered, but the other vacuum sources are vented. But ya, anyone else wannna chime in?

As long as the canister is there, the fumes are being "pushed" into , instead of having a nice vacuum to pull them from the tank.... If the canister is there you should be ok... It smells like raw gas if thats what it is.... You'd know that smell i think...

Probably is your cc breather... Old burnt blow by gases are actually toxic.....WTF

You should just run some hoses under the car from your vc and see if it stops...

Well I did a test I wasn't aware of until I 'smelt' results, :p.

Anyway, with the windows up I don't smell anything suprisingly. So maybe when I swapped the turbo something wasn't tightened enough. IDK, but it's not venting inside, just from the outside in. If that made sense.

I mean I would say it's your cat... But thats only my experience with other cars then a DSM so.. Hopefully someone can chime in better then me!!.. But if you car has under 80,000 its worth looking at considering if it is bad the government replaces it for you free of charge!!

I think it would be hard for the fumes from the cat to escape out the back and come to the front, especially with the high winds. I'm gonna do a boost leak test and see if I'm leaking out the intake manifold or something. Oh btw, I did do the egr block off mod, you think that's it?

My car has is catless and it reeks almost all the time.

Did you check simple things such as the CAT, any flanges, and the piping itself to see if you can hear anything while the car is running. Have someone sit in the driver seat while u listen under the car, and have them very slightly rev it up so you can hear of any poppin, or cracking sound. ( i guess thats how you would describe it) that would be just a simple exhaust leak.

Dude, I'm so glad you mentioned that. A buddy of mine was in the back seat and when I got on it to get on the highway he said he heard a grinding or cracking noise underneath him, but only when I shifted or something. So would I just doulbe check all the pipe fitting to fix that exhaust leak or should I look for holes.

I'm just trying to prepare myself so when I jack it up on all fours I know what to look for.

I have a test pipe btw, with the 02 sensor welded in.

It could be an exhaust leak from your manifold. Check all the bolts that hook up to the head. I know my car gets some fumes every once in a while becasue I broke one bolt off on the far upper left of the head. Try that

:tease: aww the joys of fitting in the back seat of a dsm ROFL I'm surprised he even noticed it being all crammed up in the back.

I do have a broken stud on the upper left one too, hmm. that one just seems to snap alot huh? I've read that it shouldn't be an issue but might as well replace it.
