Well after a few exciting weeks of sorting through boxes of parts and bad rewires, I finally got my 90 talon tsi started for the first time last night. Going to take it out after dark and make it pull just a little bit. Then, I'm going to break it in and make it pull really hard. I got alot of good information off of this site during my rebuild and want to thank everyone who contributed. Anyway hope to see some fellow DSMers on drives soon. :thumb:

Not to start on this topic... but I’m at 500 miles on my new engine and I still conceder myself in the "break in phase". I would give it some miles before you do anything crazy (launches, redline pulls, quick shifting, etc...) Keep her under 4 - 5k. Unless you like rebuilding engines!?!?

Just my take on the matter!

If it's built correctly. It's ready for power pulls after a few heat cycles and the rings seating. Ask any shop who build engines and has a dyno.

Yo. Rings are going to seat almost instantly with today's motors. The days of making sure you break the non roller cam in properly and drive 1000 miles before you get on the motor are over. Let it cycle, retorque the head and go do some pulls, up to 4k...up to 5k...up to 6k...then all out.

My machine shop told me that the rings will only be 90% seated after 1000 miles.

My tuning shop told me they won't dyno and tune my car with me till after 1000 miles because they don't want to risk ruining the new rings. (Mouthful)

Everyone has their own opinion on this very topic! But why wouldn't you take the safe route and just give it some time. Ya know?


EDIT: I'm just talking about the rings. I know what you're (Adam) saying about the solid lifters and valve train stuff.

We have numerous VERY reputable shops down here, both import and domestic, that do initial startups next to the dyno, them strap them on for tuning to make sure everything is perfect from startup on. Depends on how good the machine shop did. You can go by the break-in rule but I wouldn't go 1000. I had 18 miles on my 92 Talon before I made the 1600 mile venture from Iowa to Arizona and that car still pulls perfect compression and awesome power 19,000 miles later. Did a few pulls and drove it on the interstate for about 1400 miles at constant RPM. Initial break-in will make or break a motor.

I work part time for two local machine shops. One build drag engines, the other builds circle track engines. Once the cam is broken in(flat tappets) the engines are loaded several times, pressures and temps checked, oil changed, than we begin power and tuning pulls. After completion they are delivered to the customer who then runs the hell out of them. These are engines that make from 300hp to 1800hp. If somethings going to break it will break right away. Everyone has different theorys and I'm just stating mine from years of experience.

Mr. Buschur has a similar opinion as I'm sure Magnus and other believe the same.
