whats causing this knocking noise? (vid)

The way its starting sounds like your timing is kinda jacked. That could be causing the ticking as well.

Maybe try not reving your engine when its making sounds that you can't identify. It could be just lifter tick, or it could be the sound of pistons ticking on the valve.

You say that you got your GST home today; where was it and what did it have done to it?
I agree with zero about not revving the engine when you can't pinpoint what the noise is.

Alright, I am assuming that you purchased the car in this condition.

If that is the case, then I would take off the timing covers and see if all of your timing marks are in alignment.

im planning on it the guy said it sat for a year and when he started it up it made that noise but i bought the GST for 300 AS IS

There is no way that lifter tick can be that loud, I have never heard lifter tick like that, but if u really wanna see if that is the case, swap in some 3g lifters.

It's not lifter tick unless the lifters are completely clogged and not pumping up. I agree with the above: Check your cam timing.

The reason why it started slow because there was barely any gas in it and when I got home I put some in and it started faster. When I put my foot on the gas it wouldn't accelerate as fast so I may be thinking that the clutch is slipping.

sounds like the lifter tick from a fresh install where the lifters were all the way collapsed IMO, but then agian it's hard to tell from video/sound files as they can alter the actual sound... but lifters would be my guess

check teh timing marks, ( it can take up to 6 rotations for all the marks to line up including the BS marks ).. if everything lines up let it run a while and see if they start to pump up and quiet down

one thing you can do is to add a quart of ATF to your oil, it will help unstick cloghged lifters if you don't want to take them out and clean them.. but don't leave it in ... drain it after you've used it to clear everything out and then put in fresh oil

Check the timing marks for sure, When you was starting it the car didn't sound like it was running out of gas it sounded like the engine didnt want to turn over A. the valves are hitting the pistons or B. ignition timing. You may want to do a compression test.

tomorrow im planning to do compression test and other crap and I also noticed there was a plug dangling under the driver side headlight under the bumper it looked like a sensor plug but I couldnt find where it plugged into.

This might sound ridiculous but noone else has said it... Put fresh oil in it and start it up and let it run for a while. Since it's been sittting for over a year there's probably no oil in the head. When I first started my new 2.3 it sounded just like when I let it idle for the 30 minute break in. Then when I drove it around and let it build up good pressure the ticking went away. The lifters are probably dry. Check out my video on mypace and listen to the sound mine made.... Identical. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=18023458 as I said though, after driving for no more than 5 minutes, silence.

Sounds like a lifter tick. If the car has been sitting for a year the lifters are probably completely drained. My girlfriend's talon, regardless if it was started a half hour ago, will pretty much always have a loud lifter tick for a bit. It comes and goes a lot on her motor.

The part about it not accelerating quickly could be due to the knock sensor picking up a lot and retarding the timing. My talon had a bad rod knock and wouldn't free rev over 4000 and pretty much wouldn't accelerate. Food for thought.

Dang beat me to it.

oh and lccynmbr13 those yellow funnels freakin rock.

Yes sir... So does Andre at Pina lettin me borrow that from the shop for my initial start up. Damn good mechanic always hooks me up.

when I checked the oil it looked new little bit darker than what comes into the bottle but I'll change it

I sure hope its lifter tick for your sake, i had mine sound like that and the timing was off and the valves were being hit, it didnt back fire, but definitely was the problem, good luck
