hey guys Ive got a 92 talon and I friggin love it. but more power is always better. so I have a few questions, Im planning to go all motor since ive heard its a pain to go the turbo route from the no turbo version. so far i have an intake 2 3/4 inch manifold back exhaust fresh rebuild (when I bought it) and a muffler. I was wondering whats the compression ratio on the NT version is? Would putting an intake manifold show significant improvements over the stock or should I just look more towards tuning the fuel delivery and let the stock piece stay? The stock exhaust manifold is cracked in a couple places and im finding it difficult to find a header for it but I can look harder. Also I removed the AC belt and AC compressor because it didnt work (and my past wiith hondas)and less then a week later the power steering went out could this be due to removing the AC? thank you guys I hope I can go ahead and get her going all motor so I dont have to do alot of work to bring her up turbo (not that its a problem but she is a daily driver)
thank you again and sorry for the long post

I did the turbo route, and it wasnt hard at all. I have a header and downpipe along with an injen n/t intake that i used before the conversion. Pm me if you are interested. For the money, turboing is the way to go, but i've always had more respect for the guys doing it without one LOL big_d

For the money, the conversion was cheaper for us, as I found good deals on everything.

so are you using the stock pistons or did you go to the low compression pistons from a turbod version?
yeah she needs a little work yet but nothing im not afraid of. the 2nd gear synchro is screwed up and i need to trace down the power steering problem tomorrow (hopefully just something came loose and not a new pump) also I know it may sound stupid but would there be a way to make the fwd to awd? or would it be a better idea just to track down an awd and go from there (definately wouldnt mind a 2nd one already LOL)

The body is differant on the 1G, so you would be beter off going with an AWD if you want that platform. Your non turbo should be equiped with 9.0:1 compression pistons. It will work to turbo it on the stock engine just fine. I did the swap a few years back it wasn' that hard to do. You can track down all the stuff off the Turbo model cars for a good start. I own two awd cars now and plan on taking my front drive and converting back to non turbo and see what I can get out of it either with nitrous or straight methanol.

I havent really searched around here yet for it cause its not in the budget but has anyone done a tech article on how to go from NT to turbo'd? and any mods I do to it as NT should still be worthwile in a Turbo'd correct (I.E. intake mani, injectors, fuel pump, dsm link ect...) DSM link is the next upgrade I think but I did have a problem with the dash lights and I figured it out (FINALLY) it was a combo of 3 typical problems (light potentiometer, illumination ground, blown fuse) slowly but surely im getting it figured out completely.

This is a new scene to me Ive mainly left cars alone always wanted to get into the tuner scene wasnt sure about getting a dsm at first lot of friends had them had problems with them but they didnt really get it into it like I do they just expected them to do 10s and survive cheaply not happening I dont even plan on running 10s just want a quick car thats fun to work on strong and can build up slightly and tune highly (id prefer to tune then to throw parts at a car) anyway imma get off the whole shpeel

what do you mean by the 1g body is different? were the bodys from the base and the TSI AWD different? I wouldnt mind a 1g TSi AWD , GSX, or RS. but main reasoning its parts compatability

I personally went with the full turbo conversion. For one, our N/T/ is in damn near flawless condition, and two, EVERYONE said it would be a waste of time. As time goes, we are going to do the AWD conversion as well for the same reasons. We did not want the car to be w/turbo, as the potential is not there to go much bigger as it is with the full conversion. The body of the 1g n/t has the mounting points to bolt in all of the turbo accessories, but not the rear sub-frame, so modification is a must. I did not get my conversion documented, but the are a couple in the tech section for reference.
Mike

:D Hey neighbor. Good luck with the N/T build. I bet if you went to a couple of junkyards in our area you could find almost all the parts to do your conversion. You need: 1. A turbo engine harness. 2. You need a turbo engine. 3. A turbo FWD trans.

Your stock N/T pistons will not take the abuse of the daily boost of a turbo and will melt. You can go to WIdsm.org and find a lot of these parts and help for them as well. There is a guy on there with a converted N/T that is over 400HP. His handle is Use2bnt.

Greg

First off, you do not need a turbo wiring harness. Modifying the n/t harness to make it into a turbo harness is SIMPLE. I have run daily boost on my n/t pistons for thousands of miles and haven't "melted" them. I maybe have $750 in my turbo kit, and can run w/ the turbo guys all day.

If you shop around, it can be done for very cheap. With everything bought and sold, we paid about $500 for everything. But as said, if you dont have the time, you can do some bolt on's for your N/T and be happy with it as well.
Mike

i 2nd the turbo vote. as long as you have the 4g63nt in your car. if your car is the 1.8nt, i would save up a few bucks for a another platform.
that tech article called for either a 14b or 16g turbo... when keeping boost moderate, why not use a
t-25? it would be more cost effective is the only reason i ask.

Umm pretty sure N/T engine harness doesn't have a knock sensor hookup. Correct me if i am wrong. No boost solenoid either.

All you need to do is run the wires to the ECU. The pin outs are the same, but missing some on the N/T harness for BCS and knock for example. You would need the Turbo ECU, but with a parts car you should get it.
Mike

wow alot of replys hahaha anyway im going through and doing some of the free mods and really cheap ones. I know a few people that have the turbo DSMs that they upgraded (alot) and if I go turbo im planning to buy there old turbo stuff (exhaust manifold, side IC, ect ect) I plan on going through and also removing the balance shaft (this engine has already been rebuilt because of the balance shafts all receipts included) not too many miles on the rebuild I plan on redoing the rebuild if I go turbo and getting new pistons, new cams, pulleys, hard IC pipes boost gauge,
I also heard the Evo III 16G will bolt up to the 1g no problem. if I went with a 2g exhaust mani(for the purpose that they dont crack as much) would it still bolt right up?

Yes it will still bolt up. It is a fun swap to do I would say stick with it and gather all the parts from friends and local wrecking yards. You will be surprised on how much alike the Turbo and non/turbo cars are. I know on my GS I did the full swap and put in the turbo model gauge cluster, and all I had to do was add the wire from the ECU to the nearest main harness plug. On the other side of the harness that goes to the cluster, already had the wire there. Once you add the wires to the harness for the knock sensor and the Air sensor you can run things like DSMlink. I have the link installed now and havn't had any problems.

so things are going well I found a 93 talon NT for 300 dollars with a blown head gasket but clean body that im gonna use as a parts car one of my friends offered me a 4g63T with big 16b hard IC pipes FMIC computer WITH DSMlink GReddy BOV aem intake Ti valves and springs BC cams forged pistons tubular header true power pullies for 800 but the balance shaft slipped and he hasnt gone through it... could be a big pain correct?
b boost gauge and such
when I go through and check it out i may take my money elsewhere and get a 14b boost gauge and such

Not a bump an update I found a 91 Tsi (not awd though DARN) with a rusty junky body but good motor and tranny with few mods (hard IC pipes crushed BOV and manual boost controller) for between 4-600 that I was going to take the front clip off of and redo the motor over winter (also take the rims cause 1 of mine is cracked and they are in better condition) build it up and drop it into my car and use this one as a parts car (or if its not too bad of condition take the parts I need off of my car and put it on the TSI all depending)
but thats where it stands now
